$50/MONTH DISCOUNT ON ALL INTERNET: For a limited time only, EVERY internet service provider is now offering government-mandated discounts of up to $50 per month towards broadband service plus one-time discounts of up to $100 to purchase a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from participating providers. Enroll now to get these great benefits.
IMPORTANT: The CenturyLink Internet Basics program is now only available to residents in the states of Oregon, Tennessee and Washington.
In these difficult economic times with so many people unemployed or employed only part time when they need fulltime jobs, CenturyLink Internet Basics is exactly what so many families and individuals need to help them search for and apply for jobs, to follow up on job applications, to find medical care and communicate with their doctors, to help their kids with their homework, and to help them with so many other tasks that can only be done on the internet.
If CenturyLink offers high-speed DSL internet service in your area, their Internet Basics 1.5 Mbps program for low income Americans is an excellent option for cheap broadband service.
First of all, let’s be clear that there are a few differences between the Internet Basics program and the program offered by the companies participating in the nationwide Connect to Compete program.
First, let’s cover the similarities:
Both programs offer high-speed Internet for just $9.95 a month for the first year ($14.95/month afterwards). Both programs offer a personal computer for just $150. But, Internet Basics offers free introductory computer education classes while Connect to Compete customers pay a small $1 fee per class.
The Internet Basics computer also comes with a 30-day money-back satisfaction guarantee, 24/7 technical support, plus parental controls. You’ll even get your own customizable CenturyLink home page. So far, there’s no word on whether the Connect the Compete program offers these extras.
How to Qualify for Internet Basics
Now let’s get to the primary difference between the two programs: How to qualify.
First of all, it’s important to understand that the members of the Connect to Compete alliance are all cable television companies, but CenturyLink is primarily a telephone company that also offers television through DirecTV, a separate company.
CenturyLink agreed to offer the Internet Basics plan so that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) would approve its 2011 purchase of Qwest Communications, another telephone company.
As a result of being a telephone company, CenturyLink’s Internet Basics program follows rules set up for another quasi-governmental program called Lifeline Assistance which offers discounted landline phone service and free government cell phones (link it) to the financially disadvantaged. The qualification guidelines for the two programs are identical.
In short, you probably qualify for the Internet Basics program if:
- (1) You also participate in other governmental assistance programs such as food stamps (SNAP), public housing assistance, Medicaid, Section 8 housing, Supplemental Security Income, various Home Energy Assistance Programs, National School Lunch and other programs. (Each state has it’s own programs list.)
Or…
- (2) Your household income is at or below 135% to 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. (Note: It’s 135% in all states except Arizona, Florida, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, Ohio, Rhode Island and Texas, where it’s 150%.)
People in Household | All states except: AZ, CA, KS, MI, NM, NV, OH, TX, VT |
AZ, KS, MI, NM, OH, TX | CA | NV | VT |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | $15,755 | $17,505 | $25,500 | $20,423 | For any size household:
Residents under 65 $23,265.00 Residents over 65 $27,142.50 |
2 | $21,236 | $23,595 | $25,500 | $27,528 | |
3 | $26,717 | $29,685 | $29,700 | $34,633 | |
4 | $32,198 | $35,775 | $35,900 | $41,738 | |
5 | $37,679 | $41,865 | $42,100 | $48,843 | |
6 | $43,160 | $47,955 | $48,300 | $55,948 | |
7 | $48,641 | $54,045 | $54,500 | $55,948 | |
8 | $54,122 | $60,135 | $60,700 | $63,053 | |
For each additional person, add | $5,481 | $6,090 | $6,200 | $7,105 |
CenturyLink has agreed to offer the program for at least five years. There’s no guarantee that the program will continue beyond that timeframe, so we recommend that you apply as soon as possible to take advantage of this offer for as long as you possibly can.

Nodo says
NOPE. You’re behind in your news: CenturyLink Internet Basics was discontinued in WA a YEAR ago, at least! I don’t think it is being offered in ANY state (as one of the commenters below already told you–CL pulled the plug on ALL states).
IF it is offered anywhere, then you need to fix something else in your article. CL will tell you that you cannot have the Low Income rate if you are already an internet customer at the regular rate, BUT (I read the fine print)…it IS available to NEW customers who haven’t had internet with them in the previous 90 days. So, I told them I would cancel my service and “maybe” come back in 91 days. They said “you can’t do that”. I said, “I’m playing by YOUR rules…I guess we’ll find out, won’t we? Now cancel my service!” I called on the 91st day–they said, “No problem, the computer says you’re qualified for the Low Income rate.” I got my $9.95/mo rate & stayed with the plan for the five years allowed.
But it really does seem to be gone now so you need to verify that & change or pull this article.
Also, CL has a relatively new cable TV service in some areas called Prism, I believe. DirecTV belongs to ATT, though, NOT CenturyLink.
Nodo says
I just noticed–your Copyright at the bottom of the page is out-of-date. You should fix that, too. (I was a Tech Writer/Editor. I remember having to update the copyright on every document in the company’s Technical Publications collection!)
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
Thanks, Nodo. There are a million things to do as part of running our websites and sometimes the little ones (and sometimes some bigger ones) just plain fall through the crack. They’ve all been updated now and we’e scheduled annual renewal. Thanks.
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
As we’ve said numerous times, CenturyLink is undoubtedly our least favorite cheap internet service provider. Here’s an article that explains why we feel the way we feel.
https://www.cheapinternet.com/centurylink-ends-internet-basics-program-centurylink-screws-poor-americans
Sadly, we wrote them off completely when we ran the article above. It was just so clear that they were never going to do more than the bare minimum that was required of them.
You are correct that DirecTV is a completely different company.

Kathy Magers says
QUESTION: IS CENTURY LINK REQUIRED TO OFFER INTERNET BASICS IN UTAH, ADVERTISE THE SERVICE, ACCEPT THE APPLICATION, THEN NOT OFFER THE SERVICE AND “STEER” CUSTOMER TO ANOTHER, HIGHER PRICED SERVICE?
ALSO, Century Link lowered my credit score when I applied for Internet Basics in April 2018 by doing a Hard Credit Inquiry on me when I applied. In addition Century Link TOLD ME THEY NO LONGER OFFERS INTERNET BASICS IN UTAH AND SCREENED AND APPROVED ME FOR REGULAR SERVICE INSTEAD. END RESULT IS A LOWER CREDIT SCORE FOR A SERVICE I DIDNT WANT FULL PRICE.
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
CenturyLink has always been our least favorite low-income service provider, Kathy. What you describe certainly sounds unethical. If we were you, we’d write a letter to the company’s director of consumer affairs and ask to have the credit ding reversed.
J. Hutchinson says

I’m in Colorado so this isn’t available. My cheapest option is $45/month internet ONLY… no phone. (But I have found a VOIP service might link me in.) For now we need to talk to our state legislators to set laws for low income access.

I called CenturyLink and basically found out you have to pay for the first month 50 – 55 Dollars then after a bit of time they lower to the low income price if that makes any sense??? not to mention they kept pushing bundles and I am only looking for an ISP since I basically just stream not waste money on cable and their tons of commercial channels.. If there is anymore low income plans out here in Sandoval County New Mexico I would like to know….

I had just moved and was stil paying off my deposit in addition ro paying an extra $200 per month in rent and water,s sewer, garbage and gas. I am locked into a one year lease until April 2018. I began receiving Unemployment and food stamps in May snd advised century link of my circumstance. I asked about possible low income programs they may offer. Instead of assisting me they began charging late fees and reconnect fees until i could not maintain it and lost my service the end of July. With the cost of school beginning for my 11 year old son i have not been able to come up with thw $170 they want to reinstate my setvice. I am a single parent and am truly struggling financily. I had applied for several on line work from home jobs and had completed the screening process with 2 different promising companies when i lost my internet. Both positions require high speed interner. Do i have any recourse? I live in Ontario Oregon and century link has a monopoly here. I need unlimited connection with no cap on my gigs. My only other choice is Cable One..i owe them a past due cable bill of $50…but they want an additional deposit and first month…it will cost mw about $160 to start with them.Do you have any suggestions? I have been researching ISPs and am at a dead end… Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou in advancw for your courtesies.

I am in DESPERATE need of this service, and would/do qualify since I do get SNAP and MEDICAID, but unfortunately, your service area in PA only includes a few areas that would best be classified/called as “being out in the ‘sticks'”! I live in the suburban area of Philadelphia and int APPEARS that this is where I “fall off the(eligibility) charts” of being able to receive your service. I DID read above that even if you do NOT see your town in the state’s list of servicing–towns-within-the-state, you should STILL attempt to apply anyway as its possible that your area, (or more immediate surrounding area!), could have been added making you eligible to receive services after all. Of course, I paraphrased, but I DO believe that you’ll agree that i DO have the gist of what you wrote to be “on target”. PLEASE tell me if I am incorrect in believing so!Thus, I will do as you suggested & still apply, but after seeing just HOW LIMITING/RESTRICTIVE the LISTING of viable servicing areas for PA, I am not too optimistic. Consequently & VERY/EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTINGLY, I turn to you literally BEGGING for direction so that i may yet/still receive this DESPERATELY NEEDED service. Like I said, I already receive SNAP & MEDICAID benefits for being disabled, so I await your response to me, LITERALLY PRAYING for a favorable reply/response with DIRECTION leading me to BEING ABLE TO RECEIVE THIS SERVICE!
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
You’re slightly off on what we wrote, Daniel, but close enough. What we actually meant is that readers shouldn’t assume that the list of towns and cities is always 100% correct because cable service areas change frequently. In other words, contact the cable company to see if your area is currently served by the company. It might take a phone call or you may be able to plug your address or zip code into the company’s website to find out if it covers your area.
But there’s no need to nitpick by either of us because you may have other options. Check out all the low-income plans — including Internet Basics — at the following link:
https://www.cheapinternet.com/low-income-internet
Check them all out because not all of them will be available in your area, and you won’t be eligible for others, but we’re confident that at least one plan will be the answer to your problem.

I’m a disability person with Medicare &Medical Extra Help. My income is based on 135% to be low income. I only have Internet on my phone & it is had to keep up with my accounts with them. I have RA arthritis, meds are more a month then I received frome SSI. This month (June) I’m drawing my regular SS at age 66. I was diagnosed 9 yrs ago with worst then several RA. I worked 50 yrs doing payrolls for Florida Citrus Companies in Ft. Pierce & Vero Beach. I’m married for the 3rd time it’s been 12 yrs but he never help me raise my 3 children I had from my 2 marriage before. He is 9 yrs younger & the home is in his name. Which is in foreclosure court in Aug. I always help him with his payments & other part of the bills. I have bad choices in man, he like 1 of the others have had drinking problem & run with other woman. I was making as much as he would all the 27 yrs we been together but I had my rental places before he brought the house. He didn’t help much on the rental, $50.monthly .I have even made all the bills in the house til he would take out what my part out of his checking account to spend on drinking & woman. The Bank would never talk to me so he in foreclosure in 2009 but got another chance to keep it. He wasn’t aloud to be late or miss one, but he lost his job June 2015 & didn’t get 1 til June 2016. He had a 401K account & a nice a month in it so he made 2015 payments & the air was out in the house so he got a small unit put in the house then what it had. So he had a nice amount still left but put it to his 2 habits. So got behind 6 months so in Oct. 2016 they wanted him to sign another agreement which took the house (he has his taxes & insurance included in the mortage) up over $6,000.more than what he paid the for the house 17 yrs early. So he now has to go to court & fight for it. Which I have talk to a Lawyer & was told that he needs to try & sign the agreement. Because without legal help he will lose in court. I have been checking into my help & if he does, they are going to help me to get a low in income place & what every else I will need. I just find out about this help & really need it for my Drs. & Medicare & Medical websites to keep up with my accounts. I have not been on my meds.going on 2 yrs.He let me pay my part of his premium til he lost his job. I got on Medicare & was able 2 yrs after I went on disability but it took another 2 yrs for me to get the extra help on my meds. But then at Christmas 2016, I broke my lower leg close to my left ankle & couldn’t take my shots til it was heal which to 9 weeks & now I have to go thur a long Dr. Exam, to check that I don’t have TB, blood work. But after all that I will have to go to Welcome to Medicare which is all the tests for everything. So $1,000.a month is not going to go very far. But I also need eye tests & a cataract remove before I can get new prescription glasses. So Please help me to be able to do stuff like this quite & easier than on a 5″ phone. Thanks Patricia Selph, I go by Patsy

I am looking for Essential Internet and possibly the computer for 150.00, I am single parent on disability, low income, public housing, this seems like a wonderful program I would love to have help with internet the problem is I have Comcast now and I have a child in high school who absolutely needs internet for School it is the main reason we got internet. I qualify for this service after reading about the program for the first time. Does anyone know if the cable company would work with you because it would be very difficult to cancel internet for 90 days because my child needs it for school. I think Comcast and the other internet companies n this program should put the information about this program on customer bills or tell the customer when they set up cable it might be a good idea so people know about it and don’t have to cancel for 90 days, I was just told about this program.
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
We agree with you, Kathy. Seeems to us that anyone who qualifies for the low-income plan should be able to switch from the regular plan as soon as they qualify. Unfortunately, every low-income plan from every cable company has the same restrictions. Even if you disagree with the policy, you can understand it from the companies’ point of view: Just a couple months at $150 will be far more profitable than several years at $9.95 per month.
There are other plans available, though, and you should check them all out to see if you qualify and if they’re available in your area. In particular, pay attention to the plans from AT&T, PCs for People and 4GCommunity. Here’s a link that will tell you about all the low-income plans:

I had Century Link low income package for $9.95 and it was nothing but a lie. After the $50.00 hook up fee my first bill was $152.00 . I called Century Link and the lady told me that there was no way i could get internet for $9.95 long story short they settled for $20.00. For three months my bill was in the hundreds of dollars I had to call every month and talk with them. Still not getting the $9.95 they said . So i canceled internet with them and they hit me with a $600.00 bill. I’m still not done with them. This Century Link plan is a JOKE DON”T FALL INTO IT

I don’t understand free internet for low income families. At poverty level incomes. Joe do you supposed to get internet if you’re on a income that doesn’t change. There’s no extra money a month. This has very limited availability. Here in Valley City, ND, CenturyLink offers DSL only in town, but by refusing to provide a local access number for good, affordable dial-up ISPs like PeoplePC and BasicISP, CenturyLink is responsible for the fact the people in its service areas have no affordable Internet or, in fact, no Internet available at any price.
CenturyLink would do people a far greater service by letting these affordable ISPs pay for a local access number than by offering this program, which is available only in our three largest cities – all of which have other affordable options.
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
We’ve often commented on CenturyLink and its apparent lack of commitment to offering affordable internet plans, despite the existence of its Internet Basics plan. Here’s one article so you can add our list of complaints to your own.

Just to make sure you are aware, Patricia, there are numerous low-income internet plans available in addition to Internet Basics. You should check them all out to find the ones available in your area for which you qualify. You may just find that you have multiple options and one may offer you better/more service than the others. Please check them all out before you make any decisions. Linda says
Wondering whtpy Vermont isn’t on you list!
Please respond.
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
In most cases, cable companies like Comcast do business on a very local level. They need to bid for contracts in each municipality or region. None of them cover the entire country and most of them have regional clusters of areas that they serve. And rural, sparsely-populated states like Vermont are very expensive to service, so fewer companies want to provide service.
Take a look at our list of low-income service providers, Linda. You may find that one of them provides internet service in your area:

Mike Hire says
I’m 68, receive SSI, food stamps, Sec 8, Medicaid and 300 minute phone.
5 years ago I started internet with Verizon for $30 in Norfolk Virginia.
My bill is now $57 just for internet- no TV- they advertise FIOS everywhere and
state that my bill is for “high speed internet – 1 to 4 Mbps Download speed” etc
The fact is I’ve checked the speed a number of times and it’s never reached 1Mbps .
I have a desktop iMac less than 2 years old and followed all ‘rules’ for proper testing.
Why isn’t this considered ‘cheating’, lying and a scam ?
I’m sure I’m not the only one with these results, and here in Nor Va there isn’t any option for
a cheaper ‘connection’ – even though Cox Cable is here but doesn’t offer reduced plans in Virginia ?
If they say they provide 1-4 Mbps and never have why can’t I get a refund for the last 5 years? Why can’t all of us ? How should we handle this ?
thank you,
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
We can’t speak to your Verizon situation because it does not participate in any of the low-income Internet plans. There are far less expensive options for people in your situation, Mike, and you should look into them to see if any are available in your area. I just turned in my 60’s, I’m a low income citizen, and disable. I rent an income base apartment in Osakis, MN 56360.
I would appreciate let me know if in Douglas County area we have a low income seniors home base Internet access program.
Thanks in advance,

CheapInternet.com Administrator says
There are no senior based programs, Lidia. Not yet anyway. Two senior pilot programs are being conducted that may end up going national, but the results are not in yet. In the meantime, check out all the low-income Internet plans that are available. You may just qualify for one of them:

Cindy says
Are there any companies that don’t cost so much up front??? There is no way on our extremely minimal fixed income we can possibly afford all the additional installation and equipment costs these ‘low cost’ internet services require. I think we’re the only family in the school district with no internet at home, my children have gone through school without the benefit of internet because it’s just too expensive to install. I’ve only got one child left in school now at age 14, would sure love to find a way to acquire internet service for him. Any suggestions??
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
Off the top of our heads, Cindy, we don’t think any of the plans charge extra start-up or initiation fees. Checkout all the cheap Internet plans here:

Terri Seay says
Why is this not available in the Saint Petersburg FL area? I have a family of 5, I can’t afford the internet. How can we get this offer? We are fighting for my husband’s disability and we will no longer need government assistance, but until he is granted his disability, we need help. Please point me in the right direction.
Thank you very much.
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
None of the low-income plans are available nationally, Terri. But there are a number of programs and we’d be very surprised if you can’t find any available in St Petersburg. Check out all those programs here to find out (a) if you are eligible, and (b) if it’s available in your area. Good luck.

Ioni Sky says
I completed my son school lunch application and after I completed and submitted it I was brought to a internet essentials page.I read the article and call the number after I applied for the service by phone I completed the application and with 5days I had the equipment then called to schedule to have it connected. It was simply and my bill only runs $8-$9 a month. I am able to watch videos online on multiple devices and never had a buffering or speed issue at all.If you got to this page consider yourself lucky to have this info because they do not advertise its word of mouth. I called the Board of Education and spoke to the department head of the lunch program she confirmed the programs being a great source and how it’s sad that isn’t not heard of until u apply to school lunch online. If you have the service quit that bill for 90days ita worth it for a$8 bill.Holidays are coming I save so much with the decision to try something new. I hope u all find all the penny you save on this program useful to other needs in your household like my daily does.
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
Another satisfied customer. We’re glad to hear that Internet Essentials is working out so well for you and your son, Ioni.
Kelly Dockery says
Is this program offered in WInder GA 30680
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
We are unable to track the availability down to the zip code level, but you can easily contact Internet Basics to determine if it’s available in your area.
If not, there are several other plans available from other companies. Check them all out because each of them varies from the others in eligibility requirements and geographic availability. Here’s where you can find a complete listing of companies and plans:

Angela D Kaufman says
So what if you already are a century link customer?? I am DEFINITELY low income and these thieves have overcharged me and treated me horribly for almost five years. Unfortunately they are the only provider in my area. I PAY $70 MONTH FOR EXACTLY THE SAME SPEED ETC ID BE GETTING THRU INTERNET BASICS FOR $9.95. I’M A SINGLE MOTHER. THAT’S SICKENING.
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
Yeah, we hear you, Angela. Unfortunately, the rules of the program state that you cannot get Internet Basics unless you have not been a CenturyLink customer for 90 days before you enroll in the Internet Basics plan. It’s clearly a flaw in the system. On one hand, we can understand why CenturyLink doesn’t want to turn high-price paying customers into low-price paying customers. On the other hand, it seems like anyone who qualifies should be able to switch over to the low-income program for which they qualify. We hope this flaw will be fixed in the future.
However, that doesn’t do you any good right now. There is an alternate plan you should take a look at to see if you live in an area where it’s available (anywhere served by the Sprint cell network). It’s called PCs for People and you can find out more about it here:
https://www.cheapinternet.com/low-income-internet
ANDREA KOLLARS says

Dwane Sims says
This is a must for me. There is so much I have learned and so much more. A PC is library in your home. You can find a job or even make money online and so much more without leaving your home. Your knowledge can increase in five years beyond the 12 years of schooling. Right now I am on a windows phone and gb’s do not last long because there no wifi here that is not secure. Next month my internet will be cancelled. So since I am on social security I need to improve my knowledge to improve my life I need PC with internet I can afford.
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
It might be a good idea for you to check out all the low-income Internet plans that are available, Dwane. You won’t qualify for all of them, but that’s ok because you only need to qualify for one. Here’s an article that tells you about all the plans:

I noticed the section that stated-you cant get Internet Basics if you’ve been hooked up through them already. I’m trying to help my Senior neighbor, low income, on medicaide and SSI, find cheaper net service. Are these companies not required to find out if customers qualify for these cheaper services? What a scam… I live in Eugene, Oregon. Any suggestions would help. He currently pays $90, bundled with his cable. Ridiculous. Thx
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
No, they are not required to check if someone qualifies for a low-income plan. We’re sure they hope that you don’t notice, and they sell the expensive plan. After that, you can’t get the low-income plan unless you cancel service for at least 60 days.
dude says
Boost Mobile”s prepaid wifi hotspot for $25 a month is better than those plans you are talking about. No hidden fees or add on fees, just $25 a month and can quit anytime. It’s only 1.5 gb of data but is good for email and occasional use.
Internetbasics is a scam. They bait you with $9.95 a month and then add on all these other fees. With add on fees they can raise the bill as high as they want to.
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
We’ve said many times that we are not Internet Basics’ biggest fans. However, it’s not a scam and works great for many needy Americans.
dude says
CenturyLink internet basics for $9.95 is actually $31 a month, after all of the hidden add on fees are applied.
Lisa L. Duplessis says
I would like to know how to go about getting internet basics. As I am over 50 years old and living on ssi and snap. Thank you
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
It sounds as if you qualify two ways — once for participating in SNAP and again for low-income. To get started you need to contact Internet Basics and you can find that contact information right on this page.
Depending on where you live, you should also look into PCs for People, a non-profit program we really like a lot. You can check out Internet Basics, PCs for People and a few other great programs for low-income families and individuals at this link:

“Low income” and “Senior” are two different programs, Usha.
Regarding “low income” plans: you can find a full range of them in this article:
https://www.cheapinternet.com/low-income-internet
Regarding the “senior” plan: There is only one senior plan and it is only a pilot program currently being tested in a few markets. Here’s an article that tells you where and other specific info:

We are in Oklahoma sapulpa and we tried Cox and at&t and none of them will drive far out to do WiFi or cable internet we need a cheap internet that can help out here so we don’t have to internet roaming on the cellphone and not be able to check our stuff online like emails
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
There’s no doubt about it, Hannah, people who live in extremely rural areas get the short end of the stick when it comes to cable and wifi signals. On one hand, it’s understandable that the cable companies don’t want to install expensive lines in areas where there are too few people to ever make those lines profitable. On the other hand, it leaves too many people without service.
Jerry Cavins says
I am a 76 year old man lower end of the social security program less than$1200.00 a month. I do have freedompop, but for $45.00 I get about 1or 2 days a month then they reach into my card for another $15.00. I can’t afford that. What can I do. I don’t mind paying a reasonable rate but more than $20.00 a month for me is not reasonable. AsI said what to do I really can use the internet, but it’s already cost me $60.00 this month and thats almost gone in two days.
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
You have a couple options, Jerry. The only catch is that you must be in an area served by Sprint or AT&T. Read these articles for more details:

We have been trying to help our mom out with her internet so she is able to connect with all of her doctors. We went with Centurylink Basic as a Christmas gift. She is on Government assist for her phone bill through Centrylink as well. We even bought her router up front so she wouldn’t have any extra expenses. The cost we were originally quoted per month and the bill were very different! I finally was able to get someone to help in February. He set everything up again and told me the credits would show upon the next bill. Again, we paid in advance so she wouldn’t be so stressed.
She just got her new bill and guess what…nothing was correct again! After being “disconnected” 3 times in the 1st hour. The last call, I was actually on the phone 59.24 minutes, I hung up paying the bill, being told they were sorry for the confusion, could not change the payment (double what we were quoted) and would not be reimbursed for the router we bought up front. How can we rectify this? We feel helpless and mom is really stressed!
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
We’ve expressed the opinion several times that CenturyLink is just going through the motions and putting very little effort into Internet Basics. Here’s an alternate program that should work out well for your mom:

Vicki says
I live in Idaho, am on disability and bring in $13,000 a year. I pay all my own bills. Do not have a cell phone, a car or cable/satellite tv. Even after many doctor & Rx costs each month my Snap is $72 a month. That’s $18 a week, I paid $45 a month with Centurylink for phone service. I called to bundle internet and was told because I was low income the internet would be $35 a month. These costs include all the taxes. My bill went up to $111 a month instead of $80. Three separate times they lost my paperwork to prove I am low income. Told me to call Health and Welfare after the 4th call, who sent me back to Centurylink. It is too bad they are the only option because my personal experience vs what I just read makes me think this is one big lie. There are no free lunches and there are always hidden costs or terms. People beware.
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
Vicki, there’s another source you should contact. We just posted a story about an organization called PCs for People. Here’s a link to the story:

Tell me why are they aloud to rob the poor and call it low income just to scam people to get this so called affordable internet service, when it’s not?

Because I keep eating into savings and because Comcast raised their rates again next month by $10 per month, and because Comcast forces all other internet companies out of my area in violation of anti-trust law, I need cheap high-speed internet. Thank you. I live in Columbus, NJ 08022.

How do I apply for phone and internet service
m.rodger smith says
HI there;
I appreciate what I have learned here…, I am disabled, on SSDI, have telephone assistance, SNAP, and a disabled veteran. I called Century Link . I entered my zip code, 97062 and promptly got bounced to Frontier, which has my landline phone service. But they have chosen NOT to offer any discounted internet services for veterans or the disabled. The lady at Frontier was rude and unfriendly!
I contacted Comcast which does cover my area, and learned that since i dont have a child i dont qualify even with all the above factors applicable. I have had dial up for 10 years but that is ending very soon. I have a small fixed income, so what can i do. Any help is much appreciated.

I live in St. George Utah, gave up my lifeline landline for the low-income internet.
Century Link seems to be the only provider, I am moving and they say Century Link is blocked from hooking up my internet at the new address because another company has a ‘contract’ on the building.
The other company? turns out to be several carriers, none of which offer the low-income internet service OR lifeline phone.
Since I’m moving to an ‘affordable’ (section 42) apartment for LOW INCOME seniors it doesn’t make any sense at all to be denied lifeline!!!!
Any advice? Thanks. M

My husband and I live in an area with Verizon, Peoples, Etex, AT&T, Mobi and others who are internet providers but we cannot get internet service without paying more than our budget allows. We are in mid-seventies and low-income. Have had several companies out and they tell us they cannot reach us with their signals. We are just outside their area of operation. One company told us they share the area with Peoples and they are not going to rock the boat by putting up a tower. But Verizon and Mobi and Etex all are in Holly Lake Ranch, TX but they do not serve those of us around the area; AT&T offers some service but are too expensive. So, we either pay dp.com $200 to put up a tower and purchase a router or we don’t get internet. Why is it that people in Africa have phones and great service and some of us who live in rural areas can’t get a decent internet service that we can afford? It seems unfair that we have Verizon phone but no internet service AT ALL where we live and we surrounded by companies that offer internet service. Why?

Ah OK i called CenturyLink and Irene scouted out the number:
ipad mini mf432ll/8
Basically VERY old and small (16GB). Amazon only sells refurbs of that model and the iOS that ships on it is iOS 6. It appears to be a 1st generation device. Needless to say i did not obligate myself to pay $150, a required credit check AND a two year commitment for it;-) Perhaps amongst the other 2000 customers they can find some suckers to enrich CenturyLink
greg says
They (CenturyLink) offer an “iPad Mini” for $150 … but refuse to say what that is. Looking at the internet i can find various such for prices ranging from $100 to $759. Which one? To be in the program the documents appear to Require you to buy their modem to $100: w/o say why it is worth so much or what specs it has.

Thanks for your response. Century links representative was telling me I had to have both. I don’t know how to get them to let’s cancel my lifeline phone and just keep my cheap Internet I have with them in their program. Meaning, I have both cheap phone and Internet with them and I want to cancel the lifeline phone and keep my internet basics Internet.
What can I tell them to believe that I can do what I want?
Rnée says
I am hoping you can tell me if it is true that if you get internet basics from century link you also have to get and pay for the “lifeline” landline phone service, even if you don’t want it?
I don’t want/need a landline, but qualify for and want/need Internet service. So, I’d have to pay $15 a month for phone and 15 for Internet basics? That comes to $35 a month with taxes and fees. Not so cheap Internet for only 1.5 speed! Please let me know what the rules are. Thank you very much!

I just talked to a representative at Century Link to apply for the program. When I asked about eligibility for the computer/notebook for $150 I was told you need to sign 24 month agreement along with the price of the internet costing 44.95 instead of 9.95.
Seems a little misleading. What point is the computer when the price for the internet service doesn’t appear to be subsidized?
Did I receive correct information?

Just so everyone knows. This is for new customers only. I have been a CenturyLink customer for 27 years and the only way I can get this is if I stop my internet service for 3 months then apply for it. (Or so says the CenturyLink Customer Service Rep)
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
That is correct, James. This is what we wrote in the article above:
Important note: you cannot have been a CenturyLink internet subscriber in the last 90 days and you cannot have any overdue CenturyLink bills or unreturned equipment. This is important to consider, because many Americans find themselves in the situation of already having more expensive, regularly-priced CenturyLink service and not being able to sign up for their Internet Basics program.

Yeah i have read your comments and cant stop to think how the system is rigged, california is not stated on this website to be eligible, but one night on late night tv i seen an informative commercial on low cost internet here in california. In fact latin actor Edward James Olmos was on this commercial on a spanish speaking channel here in Los Angeles. So it cought my eye and come to find out were not eligible according to this site, wasteful spending on a commercial. Did you know that the Internet Service Providers (ISP) keep such programs under wraps in order fullfill contract obligations with We the People of these united states of america. 1996 Telecommunications Act gave these organized criminals huge tax breaks to this date, and get away with it with the common excuse of TO BIG TO FAIL campaingns. Take back what is ours We the People of these united states of america. NET NEUTRALITY FOR ALL. I understand where Helen is coming from. I have been in and out of the welfare office in PA as I am disabled (physically) and my daughter is developmentally disabled. I look around while standing in line at a lot of the people and see the nice clothes and shoes, the painted nails, the fancy hairdos, the fancy cell phone – and the number of children they have. I also see a lot of people step outside to smoke – if you can afford cigarettes and a fancy cell phone, what are you doing at the welfare office. I have slowly been learning how to work the system. When I first had to apply for several programs for my daughter and later for me, I was very honest and forthcoming in filling out the applications. I had a rude awakening when I got turned down for some programs that I actually qualified for but got confused with the questions. The bad thing for me is that I had to “spend down” my emergency fund and any other savings I had. The other thing for me that I absolutely hated was the attitude of a lot of the employees – they make you feel awful and discouraged. (There is another word I wanted to put in here but I can’t think of it now – I often can’t bring forth the words that I need these days, which is really frustrating). I can’t help but think, if I get confused and don’t understand what they are asking of me how do others who aren’t as well educated as I am get through the system. I don’t mean this as a put-down of others who didn’t have the opportunities that I had. It wasn’t easy but I graduated from college and got a master’s degree. The master’s was when my husband was also in graduate school, I had one child and gave birth to a second child and was working full time. There is no way that I could do that now with the physical limitations I have.
Reading through the comments on here to glean as much information as I can on the free or low-cost phone and internet, I’m not sure if these programs work and which one is the best plan for me. I have had Comcast bundled but it is just going up and up in price and I really must get the costs down. I am also a bit dismayed to find out that Comcast does have some low-cost programs which I was never told about even though I asked a number of times. I guess I just didn’t have the correct words to ask.

I thought this was meant to help people that can,t afford high internet bills but from what I,ve read to be locked into 2 year contract and if you lose job ,unemployment whatever you get stuck with huge bill you can,t pay this turns out to be a scam an pack of shit to entise an hurt poor people more so disappointed we all thought our adult lives would turn out better than this ashamed of how this country is greedy politicians an banks wiping out our country Obama,s law takes affect july 1st all disability, ssi food stamps everything stop coming were going down and we put them there god protect us all it,s coming our country our people protect us all dear lord amen

Small businesses do not make much when you live in a rural area like me, this week I only made less than 200 dollars, that is not rich, and I am not trying to be rude by giving people tips, its just that the guy on here that was criticizing someone about their disability really got to me, what type of person does that? I tend to get bipolar too and I have chronic back and side pain/arthritis, so mobility is difficult for me as well. I also would like to say that here in CA getting a job is just as hard as anywhere else. I did not know that the president got 32 million dollars from someone and stuck it in a Swiss bank, what, Obama did this, I am not sure if that is correct. And the people on here thinking someone is trying to scam someone else need to stop doing that, this is not a place to be attacking other people.

CenturyLink is a JOKE. Website not working correctly, so I called. Got transferred multiple times, finally got somebody who would actually talk to me. All of that trouble to find out my area, which is a major f***ing city, is not covered. So no low cost broadband for me because: no kids AND not in the coverage area for the programs that dont require households with a bunch of welfare brats crawling around.
This website is so helpful…..
Terry says
When I posted here earlier today that Century Link is not available in California, I based that on the Century Link map at http://storelocator.centurylinkapps.com/index.cfm . I just now searched online under the Century Link name to see if any other relevant information would come up, and it appears that they may have some offerings in California. However, their web site is not recognizing the zip code. I entered several other zip codes to see what would happen, and none are recognized. So again, that leads me to believe that they do not service this state.

Chylene Ramsey says
Helen, do your clients a favor, and retire. You’re totally burned out. I was forced into resigning from the Postal Service, because I have bi-polar disorder, and I hate running into social workers like you who think I am scamming the system when I have done everything I can to get empluyed and retrained and have had no luck. I aced every test they ever gave me at those government “rehab” prgrams, and then they’d tell me I was “too unstable” to go through their prgrams. “I worked 18 years, served in two branced of the military and got 4 college degrees before I was ever diagnosed.” I told them. “So, how do you figure I’m ‘too unstable’ to learn how to type and fil out job applications?” They couldn’t answer. And YOU go try applying for the big scam that is SSI. My own money that I paid all my life into–I worked before the PO and had earned my full quarters–and I had to wait 1 1/2 while they messed around. The last interview, the guy gave me a fishy look and said he couldn’t see why I couldn’t work SOME kind of job. I told him, “Fine, mister. You get on that phone, you call someone who’s willing to hire a 45-year-old manic depressive, and ‘ll go right over and start working for ’em right now. If you can’t, then shut the hell up and give me MY money.” He did. You know how much it was a month? $600. You try living on $600 a month if you think it’s some big scam to rip off the government when you got a president who’s got 32 million bucks socked away in a Swiss bank account that he’s ripped off people like me. I’ve been working on getting myself independent since I learned about e-commerce with an old laptop my ex gave me, and internet fees are about to devastate me. I am VERY grateful for ANY kind of break I can get on them. I want to be independent and earning my own way again; the government sure as hell didn’t give a flying f–k up to now.

So. I just wanted to comment that this program seems like it could work for a minority of people CL serves. As far as people coming for and deciding who is and isn’t disabled I wonder when they decided that so called abusers weren’t working stiffs? How exactly does having I-phone, nails, and colored hair qualify any of that which you speak of, as disabled? You seem to think because of these superficial qualifications you made up that people arn’t working and have abused the system . Please realize if you don’t have a medical license or even if you do, you can’t actually see anyones health history on their phone, nails, or hair color. It seems your are jealous and likely work in social services field, like myself, and become undone by being taken advantage of by the state or nonprofit /corp for whom you work. This is something that is systematic and turn people against others in effort to make “abusers” pay by taking away services. Something to think about is that every tax paper has given to these services and deciding “to much abuse” is happening doesn’t mean those tax dollars come back to you. I will
Elaine says
With all these programs and still nothing for the low income that don’t live in a city. I live in the country and can’t find a single provider to help me out. I would have to get internet through a dish or get a land line and hope for cheap dial up which would get costly to get a land line. I have 5 kids all in school and I am disabled on a fixed income. I receive food share and medical. But still no help for me. And every year the kids are to do research from a computer which means a trip into town to wait in line to get on the small library computer.

As someone who has worked with the Government providing services to those “allegedly in need” I can tell you that more often than not we are providing services to those that know how to WORK THE SYSTEM. The ones that do need it cannot get the services because they are utilized by those that are ABUSING the system. As a Medical Professional for more than 25+ years Fibromyalgia is painful but it is NOT LIFE THREATENING nor is it a HANDICAPPING illness. I work with a woman who is deemed “legally blind” another who has cerebral palsy and must use multiple devices that aide her speech mobility typing etc Society today has become one where everyone has there handout and expects everything to be given to them at a discount or for free or some form of government program We take care of everyone now Pretty soon every parking lot will be nothing but handicapped spaces how pathetic have things become Look at how many people are “riding in those da#$ scooters” at an outrageous price to the government for those. Every time you see one say to yourself “I paid for that” while you are on your way to work and they are lounging around. (I apologize for not being able use the comma key on the computer but one of my clients broke it today). I may seem cynical but after 35 years working within various government programs I have seen it all. The abuses that go on disgust me as a taxpayer and someone that tries to help the few that truly are needy. Then to hear people boo hoo and make more of a problem because they know that that is THE ONLY WAY they will get a “FREE CHECK” such as SSI/SSDI is even more disgusting. We are becoming a society of lazy sit on their asses with their hands out looking for as many ways to get something for NOTHING. They are too disabled to work but they can sit in front of a computer all day or play video games or text on the NEWEST smart phone. Funny they need all the government assistance there is but when you see them sitting in the waiting room they all have the newest phones their nails done name brand clothing their hair colored etc… and the parking lot is full of brand new cars etc… They dress better and have newer equipment than the employees serving them. I could continue on with more information but I am sure for the average citizen that reads the newspaper some of this information is not new. Just like the proliferation of the abuse of handicapped placards at some point someone needs to step in and place new rules because I know as someone that works with the handicapped that this is ONE AREA with OUTRAGEOUS ABUSE. Yes you can not tell if someone is handicapped by how they look but the proliferation of the number of placards does not coincide with the number of handicapped persons. The abuse is this area is terrible. I tell people that think it is funny or it must be a “luxury” to live in the body of someone that suffers from intractable pain 24/7 and can not do things unaided to trade places and then see if they still consider it a “luxury” to use a handicap placard.

Bravo to all of you who stood up to the self righteous on this comment forum. To those of you who saw fit to criticize a woman asking for help…You should be ashamed. I raised three children.. two of them were very intelligent.. graduated high school in the top of their class, and went on to very reputable colleges, where they both continue make the deans list each semester. My third child was born with a slight learning disability, and struggles with certain subjects, the worst being English. While she tries hard and continues to improve, she does from time to time misspell words, or fail to put them in the proper grammatical form. There was a time when such things got under my skin, but life chose to knock me down a peg and give me first hand knowledge of how some people struggle with things that came easily to me… I pray that some of you never know how it feels to see someone you love dearly sit with head in hand and cry because some idiot chose to judge and condemn them without knowing anything about what made them the way they are .. but if you do ever experience that, then I hope you remember comments that you have made like the ones written here… and that you gain an understanding through it, and just maybe, become a better person.
Ms Bradshaw, congratulations on your recent graduation.. Hold your head high and good luck in future endeavors

I’m amazed how ignorant and self righteous our society has become. A woman asks for helpyet she’s criticized? You don’t know her circumstances. Bandit, how do you know she never contributed or volunteered. She may ver well have done so, BEFORE her body gave out. So much hate and anger. Grow up! I get the whole lazy welfare families…generation after generation. I’m angry as well. People abuse the system. That said, there IS a system. The system is designed to help the needy. Is it abused. Yes. Instead of lashing out at OP, try your congressman. I hope you have paid your health/long term disability premiums. Gawd forbid you should become chronically ill!

There is a lot of criticism going on by people in the same boat especially the comment about not being able to afford a PC if you cannot afford a phone but I have a system that has worked for me since becoming disabled, keep in mind I have no children at home so it is much easier.
When I signed up for phone lifeline and LIHEAP electrical assistance I was broke but with each month that my electrical and phone were paid for or some help given.
I put the cash aside equal to what I would have paid to help purchase my auto insurance; Yes put the money aside and forget it even if it means eating a can of beans or corn until my next month SS arrived so I was able to keep the car to go to the Dr and I got an insurance plan where I give the miles I drove to cut my auto insurance in half.
With the high price of gas I simply quit driving except to the Dr and store when I cannot use my bicycle.
Being broke means different things to different people but when you cut all you can without becoming a hermit and using will power with what little you have the dollars go further.
The electrical assistance pays for my car insurance as I only drive about 100 miles a month, the phone help also adds up and can be used to purchase the discounted computer; I hope congress can realize how the poor can use the help to save them money and make our life a little easier and pray they do not cut Food Stamps on us.
So much hate talk from many who do not understand.
Take care and best wishes to all!

I signed up with TWC here in Palmdale, Ca.
I pay $19.95 a month; plus $3 a month for a modem, they gave me a free router for WIFI.
I am online at 54mbs. I am satisfied with this setup and did not have to sign any contracts.
We have a land-line with lifeline assistance, no cell phone. I tried a cell phone five years ago, but i could not hear the dam thing; no matter how loud people tried to talk. I could not dial it,( i was a carpenter, my fingers are big), i would press two or three numbered buttons at a time.
What i need is a cell phone with big buttons and an extra loud setting for people with a hearing loss.
WantingCheaperInternet says
I just called Centurylink about the 9.95/month internet service they “offer.” They offer this ONLY if you have not had internet service with them for the past 90 days, so you CANNOT use this Internet Basics program they “offer” to reduce your current expenses. I’m in an area where Centurylink is the only provider of phone service and for those living where cable isn’t installed, the only provider for wired internet service as well (it’s DSL). Seems they have put in “requirements” that don’t allow you to actually get this service anyway.
I’m disappointed. I currently pay them 36.99 a month for internet service for what was supposed to be 24.99 a month for life. That 24.99 price ONLY is available if you have bundled internet service with other services they offer. Their web page centurylink.com/internetbasics doesn’t connect to the tabs or the buttons on the page either, so you can just “trust” what the rep says when you call in…
So, Internet Basics that Centurylink agreed to provide so the FTC would allow them to buy out the old phone company here just isn’t available after all…

majic jack plus costs $70 for the unit. when you install it you get free phone service for one year. it costs $25 dollars to renew each year. that is a savings of over $990 a year.
you have to have a router to use the service.
the rabbit tv unit costs $10 at walmart.
my initial investment will be $121 dollars…….. my savings will be approximately $200 a month. not too bad for a low income retiree.
now if i can find some cheap dsl……hmmmmm.

I’d just like to say that these programs are a God send for people that cannot afford high speed internet in general. I’m on dial-up now, and it’s driving me crazy! I’m on SSI, Sec,8, Medicaid, and food stamps. I’m going to give it a shot and see if I qualifly here in NY. Unfortunately, my daughter at the moment is living with her paternal aunt, so, I live all alone with my three cats. I’m pretty computer literate, and I use the computer to pay my bills, rent, communicate with my doctors, family, and friends. I have arthritis in my back and both hips, so, I’m very limited in my mobility, which is why I depend on the computer a great deal. It’s made my life easier where I don’t have to do too much traveling. I’m going to give it a shot and see if I qualify for Internet Basics. I know it probably doesn’t cover NYC, but, what do I have to lose? My work will get done quicker with broadband than on dial-up, so, I’m going to give it a shot. In any event, I submitted my email for updates if I don’t qualify for any of these programs. Thanks for putting the word out on these programs. I really appreciated it very much. Thank you.

Century Link is full of it. Yes they do offer the program but they make it almost imposable to get. I met all their qualifications, but they told me that I had to pay a deposit, and install a second phone line which was going to cost $99 on top of the reg. deposit they had already given me. Century Link is only in it for themselves.

I feel like I’ve been royally screwed by Verizon. I signed up for a 4GLite device and was told the Internet service would cost me $50 per month for DSL. Well, today, I received an email from them saying that I’m over my usage limit and they want to charge me an additional $200 for this Month. First of all, when I signed up with them, they never told me there was a limit to my Internet usage per month. Right now I can’t afford this $200 they tacked onto my regular bill, so, I’m going to have to burn them on it. Luckily, I didn’t sign up for auto pay for billing, so, they can’t take it out of my account. There isn’t enough money in there to cover it anyway. Well, I’m going to either sign up for this cheaper service, or rely on free “Hot-Spots” in public to get Internet. Verizon Sucks!!!

yeah me too, I got a home connect device contract signed and everything so now I am locked into a 2 yr agreement too and if I cancel they will charge me 200 dollars, geez! I wish I never got the stupid home connect device. But then again, the service is only 20 dollars a month.

netzero is dial up and centurylink is dsl. Dial up is the cheapest, dsl is a little bit more expensive, if you do not want lightning speed, go with either broadband or dial up. For those who do not know what broadband is, it is kinda like dial up but with a router, for example, I use my cell phone (a droid) hooked up to my computer using a usb cable and I get connected using a program called pdanet/foxfi22, if you type this into your google play/browser on your phone, you will find it, click to download and accept the agreement, it will then install your program on your phone, you will need it to be installed on your pc, so hook your phone up to your pc, choose the file, and install it.
Its that simple
I am not lying and it works for me…so anyways happy surfing everyone!

Hello, I am a senior and on SS, so is my husband. We have a dialup Internet – very bad, slow connection, so I use the library computer in order to access my emails and check out various websites for my research on family genealogy and novel writing. We live in an area where there is no cable, no DSL, etc. Wireless service for Internet is available, but expensive at $50 a month or higher, depending on which service. We live in zip code 78653 (Texas). We are now in process filing for assistance. We are considering cancelling our land phone to save some on monthly bill of $49, as my husband has cellphone (thru Verizon) for $40 monthly. I use T-Mobile sidekick cell phone for text messaging only (I buy no contract card as needed, $10 a month). My deaf friends keep pressing me to get video talk device via web cam, but I would need much faster connection for that. Any chance of getting a better, much faster Internet but cheaply in our area???? Thanks

They say they have to do it this way, but really they have set it up in a way to trap people on purpose. If it made more money that way for them then I wouldn’t need to bundle by end of week.
Sandra says
Sounds like Century Link did this for 4-5 years just to pacify the gov. and get permission to buy our wonderful old Qwest phone service. My DSL has gotten much slower since that sale. You’ll probably do better with the Cable offers, if they don’t make you also buy at least the basic Cable service.
Truth is, the three Mega-Corporations that own ALL of the media and are buying up all the land-line companies are only in it for the money. They have no compassion and no community or national spirit so don’t expect any quarter from them. However, this attempt by the government to include people who are being by-passed by the digital age, especially students. If it doesn’t work well, it’s because they allowed the Corporations too much choice and didn’t add enough government regulation to the package. The FCC, just like the FDA, is a gov. watchdog committee full of former Corporate officers who are there to be sure the program funnels the funds from the public treasury to private corporate pockets with the least cost to them. How’s that privatization working for the citizens?
John says
Sorry, this is not cheap broadband or even broadband at all. Phone companies do not offer broadband. They offer dial-up. It would be a nice deal if this were a real offer, but so far it is all a bunch of garbage and lies.
Cheap Internet Administrator says
John, you need to educate yourself before posting. Phone companies offer DSL, which is high-speed broadband. If you feel everything is a lie from these companies, contact the FCC. Of course, they are the ones who set up the programs so I doubt they will be receptive.
Steve Hamm says
John, depending on where you live, you could be in a dial-up only area for Internet sevice. That would mean you live in a very rural area. Otherwse, what the administrator said is true. DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) is a broadband service offering speeds far in excess of dial-up. Also, unlike dial-up service, DSL also offers as both an Internet connection and a landline phone service.
JanH says
I don’t have a landline phone – I have Magic Jack, which uses my internet connection.
How would the internet work in my case? I am not wireless and have no desire to be.
Sandra says
OK, that’s enough. You don’t even know what you’re talking about. I have DSL (ever heard of that? it is 1.5 mpb NOT “dial up”) and I have it through CenturyLink along with my landline phone service. Cable companies have tried to convince people that only they have “blindingly fast 1.5-3.0 mbp broad band” and “phone companies only have dial-up” but those are just advertising LIES every heard of those? I thought not. I can even stream movies and TV shows on what I have on CenturyLink. So get off your high horse and rationally check things out and know what you are talking about before you parrot any more trash to confuse the poor people trying to see how they can keep up in a rapidly changing digital world that is leaving them behind. Just FYI, I am a retired 72 year old low income senior who came here to see if I can lower my costs and can’t believe the harassment of the poor going on at this website. And yes, I can spell and type, but in 1995 when I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, I could hardly spell my own name correctly so everyone shut up about Laural Bradshaw’s comment. She can probably hardly stand to sit with her arms outstretched to type. And your brain can be so fogged people think you are mentally ill. It gets better but the first crash is pure hell.

I don’t get this. In California at least, if you sign up for $9.95 ($10 ??, I’m rounding….) with this plan, you have to lease a modem (relatively slow) which is “free” for the first year and $7.49 plus tax thereafter. If you’re wireless, which most people are, you’ll need a router (faster, depending on your location), which is NOT free for the first year and will cost $8.49 plus tax. Either way, its getting close to the $20 connection plans that are available through almost all commercial cable and phone providers. Offhand, what with tacking on the additional hardware lease cost, it doesn’t seem that the Internet Basics program is much more than a ploy. I haven’t checked the other programs carefully yet, but if the FTC allowed this one, I would read the remaining plans carefully.

YOU GOT IT!!!!!
Tried Century Links low income internet service (internet basics) and immediately started receiving a bill for over $200. each month. First phone call I made, I asked for info on their internet basics program and was told $10.00 (rounded off) plus taxes and surcharges. I asked if there was any other costs associated w/ the service – they said no, we send you everything you need to get started w/ instructions how to hook it up. My first bill was well over $200. Second phone call I made, they told me they hooked me up wrong and it will be corrected – then they sent me another bill for over $200. Third phone call I made, I was told I should only send in $29. (my phone + internet – rounded off) and it will be corrected – then they sent me another bill for over $200. plus a threatening disconnect letter for my phone and internet, unless I paid the total amount by a certain date. Fourth phone call I made, I was told I owed that amount because they had to install it for me. I hooked everything up – they NEVER did ANYTHING to help me, including straighten out the mess they made of my account. After being thrown from one rep to another and speaking to a dozen different people (where no one had the same excuse), I told them to cancel my internet service and I was actively looking for another phone service as well. I walked away from the entire experience with the feeling of being scammed!!!

What Laural Bradshaw wrote is a prime example of what our nation has become. It is not stated what or where she graduated from but this a fail by GED standards much less any college level. Piss poor grammar, spelling and lack of structure. People like her feel entitled to things whereas they deserve to function as a doorstop. These are the people that our hard earned tax dollars go to support. I can understand being dealt a bad hand but what separates the real from the fakes are the ones that make something of themselves.
You whine that you can’t follow the damn directions when an article is a guideline. You want it handed to you on a silver platter, with a maid to spoon feed it to you. There are medical students that go to campus, Starbucks, and the library to use high speed Internet. Free. These same students work their asses off and sleep in the classrooms when Superstorm Sandy knocks out their power. They don’t gripe to their proffessor that they didn’t have a hot shower therefor they want an extension on their finals. Yet these students find a way to make it happen. It isn’t because they are grossly intelligent (some are) but they have drive and ambition to succeed where the others flounder. Bradshaw is snap shot of the nation – I can’t get no job, I be very edukated.
You should be ashamed of your post Bradshaw.
RD says
Bandit, thank you for the chuckle and for telling it like it is. It is sad, but too true.
Of course is it isn’t just medical students, it is a lot of other types of students and adults too. Sometimes you need to think outside the box. At least people need to think and work more and to whine less.

Bandit…you were extremely rude and condescending towards Miss Bradshaw. I read her post and thought she is working towards lifting her family up. Maybe some of the spelling errors were due to stress at the time, or she didn’t catch the misspelled words. It happens. I enjoy a well wrote sentence or paragraph however everyone makes miskes. It was a mistake for you to make harsh judge mental comments about her post. You should be ashamed of your post BANDIT.

You know, English is often a confusing language. American English makes me down right nauseated. I am so sorry your grace. That we lowly peasants, who attended only the goverment sponcered secondary schools, are unable to please you with our gramer. Dear god, move out of the country you hateful pig.

Ms. Laurel Bradshaw, congratulations on your recent graduation, it is not easy to go back to school when you have adult children, everything has changed so much since you were last there, I know. You have proven your perseverance already, the right job will not be far away.
Such shameful attacks on someone who has put in the effort to go back to school as an adult is disgraceful, and you should be ashamed of yourselves!! Ms. Bradshaw has adult children in college, is living with friends, so is not a burden on the system. She has a very debilitating and painful condition that attacks all of the nervous systems in the body. It is highly probable that she also has very stiff fingers, and typing is painful for her. So what if she makes a few typos? Good grief! who are you to judge? This is NOT an English grammar classroom! Get over yourselves and stop being so pompous.
I have impeccable English. I grew up in England. I was educated by nuns with a ferocious penchant for correct spelling and grammar. I am a Scrabble maven and proud of it. Despite all this, I also sometimes make typos that I do not spot until after I press ‘submit’, despite careful proof reading.
I am also an American Citizen who used to work three jobs. I used to also be a foster parent, caring for some very disturbed kids; who through no fault of their own, had been neglected and moved through the system so much that their education had constantly been interrupted and suffered.
Now at only fifty years of age, I also have the misfortune to find myself disabled and unable to work, and am totally broke and in debt from waiting for my share of SSDI that I have paid into for so many years. It is something that I know I should not be ashamed of, but thanks to the attitude of several such as those above, I am.
I rarely leave the house because I cannot afford the gas to drive into town. Internet is my only contact with people, and it keeps my sanity. Unfortunately, it is expensive, and many of these options do not seem available in Vermont.
It is a sad reflection on this society that people are so quick to be so nasty instead of reaching out a helping hand. Try just greeting a stranger with a smile, or helping an elderly person with something heavy. You will be amazed at how good you will feel after their gratitude. I may be on food stamps, but I can still search through the newspaper dumpster at the recycling center for the coupon inserts, get terrific deals, even on items I don’t use, and donate them to the food shelf.
Hold your head up high Ms. Laurel Bradshaw! Thanking this site in advance of whether of not you are able to qualify for cheap internet, shows the utmost class! Do not let the likes of “Bandit” and “MKEgal”, who don’t even have the gumption to leave their real names, bring you down. they are the ones who should be ashamed of themselves, not you!

Did your Mommy & Daddy pay for your way starting in elementary through High school? Or are you a foregner that had the government help you start up your liquor store?! You could probably run to family to get help or a loan for your new car or house. You make yourself out to ba a superman, why?!
Let`s hope you don`t get into a accident that will cause you to retract your words!
Your temper, discourse, & control shows your not educated enough to complain about disabled / handicapped people that are useing resources the government offers to all americans in need.
“You” should be ashamed of “your” post!!

Correct your own English and content before you judge others. Most of the poor grammar, misspellings, and sentence structure that I hear are from the so-called educated, highly educated ( a phrase that is like nails on a chalkboard), and graduates of colleges. As a middle class person, you receive more entitlements- under euphemisms, so as not to offend your sensibilities-than any group: student loans, child care credits, weatherization and energy credits, parking subsidies, mortgtage interest deductions, property tax deductions and more. These are paid for by the poor and working poor who are not eligible or able to take advantage of them. The wealthy of course receive the most in terms of dollar amounts-this free phone and internet services were provided because the companies received what they wanted-government give backs, tax exemptions and so on, including tax breaks for the service-billions of dollars in the pockets of the rich, so do not act as if the poor, disabled, and elderly, are alone in getting entitlements. This notion is old, tired and erroneous..

I agree with you… That was a pretty cold thing to say to someone who is asking for information to try to improve her own personal situation and to help send her children thru college…
I worked in Customer Service and if we were caught disrespecting our customers like he did, we would have faced some sort of disciplinary action…
He acts like he represents Customer Serves Us… So, my words to him is get another job… You don’t belong in Customer Service.
And to you… I say, thanks for bringing that to his attention…

I don’t know if you’ll see this because it’s been awhile since you posted this, but I hope you do. I also have Fibromyalgia and am on SSDI. If the people that critized you on here experience the intense bodily pain & muscle knots that we do, they’d be totally ashamed of their cruel, judgemental words. Don’t mind them honey. They’re just ignorant of how this condition affects a person. I hope the new year is just filled with unexpected blessings for you & your family. 😉 P.S. hopefully those people will also learn how much happier THEY can be by encouraging people instead of criticizing them!!

Do not feel disparaged. Most of the comments contain spelling errors, syntax errors, punctuation errors, and sentence structure defects. Despite the fact that so many feel so intelligent and educated, they are unaware of their lack of proper English skills. It is epidemic in this country. In reply to your uninformed detractors, I say correct your own English and content before you judge others. Most of the poor grammar, misspellings, and sentence structure that I hear are from the so-called educated, highly educated ( a phrase that is like nails on a chalkboard), and graduates of colleges.
