$50/MONTH DISCOUNT ON ALL INTERNET: For a limited time only, EVERY internet service provider is now offering government-mandated discounts of up to $50 per month towards broadband service plus one-time discounts of up to $100 to purchase a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from participating providers. Enroll now to get these great benefits.
Comcast, the cable TV giant, is the biggest name in the low-cost internet business with a program called Internet Essentials. If you live in areas of the country served by Comcast and you qualify, you can now get Internet Essentials for just $9.95 per month instead of the $40–60 (after teaser promotions) the company charges for its lowest cost basic plan. As of August 2019, more than four million low-income Americans now are online thanks to the wonderful program.
Consider this important statistic: Only 45% of families earning under $30,000 currently have broadband service in their homes. This puts those parents and their children at a huge disadvantage when it comes to finding and applying for jobs, communicating with doctors, completing homework and other everyday tasks that more affluent families take for granted.
Internet Essentials costs just $9.95 a month and delivers a blazing fast 15 Mbps download speed. Qualifying families will even be able to purchase a computer for only $149.99. There is required. No credit check. No installation fees. No activation fees. And, believe it or not, there are no additional equipment fees, and your internet now comes with a wireless router.
You also get the world famous Norton Security Suite which gives you professional online security. It’s a $160 value, but you get it absolutely free.
And finally, Internet Essentials gives you free parental control features to help protect your kids whether they’re doing their schoolwork or just playing on the internet.
How to qualify for Internet Essentials
Let’s give Comcast some credit here — the company has consistently opened Internet Essentials to more and more low-income Americans.
Eligibility for the program was once restricted to people with at least one child who qualified for the National School Lunch Program, but that restriction is now a thing of the past and millions more are now eligible including:
- People with disabilities
- Seniors on Medicaid
- All low-income adults (defined as 38% above the poverty line in your area)
If math is not your strong suit and you don’t know which side of the 38% you fall on, you can also qualify if you participate in any of these Federal assistance programs:
- The National School Lunch Program (free and reduced-price school lunch)
- Medicaid
- Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP/food stamps)
- HUD housing assistance and Section 8
- Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (welfare)
- Supplemental Security Income (Social Security)
- Head Start or Early Head Start
- Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
- Tribal assistance (including TTANF, FDPIR, etc)
- WIC (Women, Infants, and Children)
- VA pension (Yea, vets!)
A couple restrictions
Comcast has proven itself to be pretty generous with the Internet Essentials program, but there are three reasons the company might deny service to those who are otherwise eligible:
- You cannot have been a Comcast internet subscriber in the last 90 days. If you want to get Internet Essentials, you are going to need to cancel (if you contract allows) your service and call Internet Essentials to sign up after three months.
- You cannot have a Comcast bills that is over 12 months past due. However, if you have an overdue bill from just within the last 12 months, Comcast has recently changed the rules and will accept you as an Internet
Essentials customer, provided you agree to the payment plan they work up to pay off the late bills.
You cannot have any unreturned equipment. - Of course, you have to be in an area served by Comcast, but you’ve got a good chance, since Internet Essentials is available in more than 4,000 school districts in 39 states plus the District of Columbia.
The states we show as having Comcast Cable available are: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia (DC). If you don’t see your state on the list, you should still check with Comcast in case they’ve added service in a state since we wrote this.

Once enrolled, a customer will be able to continue receiving Internet Essentials service at the same low price as long as at least one child in their household continues to qualify for a reduced or free lunch under the National School Lunch Program.
Internet Essentials originated when Comcast acquired NBC. In order to win FCC approval, Comcast agreed to “increase broadband deployment in low income households” for three years. In 2014 they said they would like to run the program “indefinitely.”
Let’s hope they keep to that plan.
If you aren’t able to get Internet Essentials in your area, or if you have trouble qualifying, take a look at our exhaustive list of low-income internet providers to find one that might be able to help you. And keep up with the latest developments on our news and blog page.

We are raising 3 grandkids and they receive free lunch in school. We both have health issues and can’t work. We have Comcast now. When I recently signed up for Comcast I said that I saw Margie Jackson on the news for Comcast internet essentials and that’s what I needed but I don’t think they listened to me.
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
Sorry, Renee, but we’re not sure what you’re asking here.

i took over my father’s account after he passed, as i needed internet to handle the estate from his house.
I have now decided to move into the house and have not had comcast in my name. I qualify for the internet essentials but they are saying that I have been a customer and have to cancel and wait 3 months. Sounds like a load of it! Should I fight or just go back to books and jigsaws for 3 months?
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
Sounds to us like you should qualify under the circumstances. If the current account is in your father’s name and you can prove he passed away (for example, with a death certificate), seems fair to us. Call in again and ask to speak to a supervisor.
Wendellyn Plummer says
At this point in my life, I never thought I would have to have assistance. Even though I have a very minimal income from the Company I was forced to retire from, I have Lupus and I very rarely missed work, NO one at Comcast said that I might be able to qualify for a reduced rate from them. I also get a reduced amount of Social Security as I had to retire at the age of 62. I tried to get SSI, but was told and refused by SS and an attorney that Lupus was just a reason not to work. I was told by said attorney that I was lazy and go get a “REAL” job. I have worked since I was 15 and my last company for total of 23 years.
My HOA had always provided our Internet coverage and when they could not reach an agreement on terms, we had to find our own coverage. I waited almost another year before I got the VERY high priced TV and Internet coverage from Comcast. Since our houses were already wired for Comcast, I thought this would be a good idea and less cost. I must say I am very new to this “asking for help,” situation in my life. Thank you for the number to call and I will be doing so later on today.
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
Sorry to hear about your health problems, Wendellyn. We have a couple friends with lupus and it can be a terrible disease.
Unfortunately, once you have signed up with Comcast for a regular-priced plan, they will require you to go without internet for 90 days before you can enroll in their low-cost plan. Yes, it’s a crazy rule, but one that all the low-income service providers have.
You also might check out all the plans in your state (link below) to see if any of them are available in your area. If so, you might be able to switch over to one of them immediately. Here’s that link:

What kind of offer is Comcast offering that one must be disconnected if they are current customers and wait 3 months to be reconnected in order to be eligible? This is a evil way of being sure you will not be eligible (or go completely without ANY internet for 3 months) for many families who circumstances have changed in the past year or two.
Motorcityrich says
The article said that “People with disabilities, Seniors on Medicaid, All low-income adults (defined as 38% above the poverty line in your area)” qualify for the plan.
I am a disabled (with muscular dystrophy), (not on Medicaid) low-income Senior (less than 38% level), and was told that I do not qualify for the plan.
Is the article inaccurate on those points?
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
Hmmmm. Interesting question, Motor. Comcast has widely advertised these eligibility rules for a long time, but now they do not show up on its website. We will investigate and report back.
Motorcityrich says
Thank you! I am interested in what you you can find on this.
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
Here is a list of ways you can be eligible (taken directly from the Internet Essentials website):

SSI: eligibility letter for Supplemental Security Income.
NSLP/Head Start: copy of a letter indicating current participation in the National School Lunch Program or Head Start, with your child’s name, the school name, and the address of where you are requesting service.
LIHEAP: letter confirming your eligibility for Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.
WIC: eligibility letter for the Women, Infants, and Children program.
FEDERAL PELL GRANT: (Colorado and Illinois only) documentation from your community college’s financial aid office.

I had applied twice for Comcast essentials. Was placed on an over-affordable plan against my wishes by Xfinity employee after he requested I provide my mothers death certificate. As the plan became un-affordable and fell delinquent I reapplied for Essentials and was denied. After a few weeks we were facing eviction and homelessness. I am a Veteran on a partial disability with my disabled adult son and his 5 year old with whom he shares custody.
I was contacted by city services after my PG&E and Utilities were placed on a low-income status and was offered to have my Xfinity account restored at a lower rate and then eventually pay off the balance of the account to which I agreed. I was provided this install information – Your Installation Information Order Number:100149446690**** Installation Appointment: Tuesday, February 04, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm Service Address: ********************* Questions about your installation? | Prepare for installation Here is a summary of your order Monthly Charges

and was asked to return any and all equipment the servgice technician didnt reecycle or reuse which I did the following morning.
After only 4 days of the account being reactivated Collections Agent Allyssa from Xfinity spoke harshly to me demeaned me, turned off the account while I was in the middle of checking and responding to my emails. She demanded $1000.00 stating that I never returned the equipment which I had, and attempted to provide the Tracking number and receipt information form the returned items. She was rude, abrasive and made false accusations for which I have suffered and feel violated by Xfinity as of now because immediatley after YOUR Organization reinstated the account with only just under $400.00 outstanding which I had discussed with a representative about getting that caught up as soon as HUD-VASH and Veterans Resources assisted me to get situated and back on our feet. A bill arrived shortly afterward for $1723. again claiming that i was at fault, cutoff my contract early (which was done on YOUR part) and that I maintained your equipment and had not turned it in which it was and I still possess the 3 receipts and confirmations.
As of today I still receive multiple daily emails advising me how to best utilize the Flex plan for which YOU had installed and also phone calls from your collections.
I have suffered some physical, emotional and mental crisis this last year and am unable to work at present and have a terminal illness that has limited my abilities and limited our income greatly. I have spoken to the BBB and other agencies about how to best resolve this issue as I do qualify for the Essentials plan which we were denied and I will pursue legal action to protect myself the onslaught of accusations and lies about the equipment and how we were misled and mistreated by your staff in regards to the program plan you suggested and then immediately turned off and took away from us and then began amassing fees and charges that were clearly in your error.
Please examine how to proceed forward and provide us the service and assistance that YOUR Customer Service and Essentials Program agents are capable of and withhold from the assault, insults and accusations from the Collections department. Please call me at 714-718-**** to resolve this and establish (re-establish) the Comcast Essentials…

That is such a load of bull. Is Comcast pretending to offer this while actually not offering it in ost areas? I am in Portland, Oregon. You list Oregon on this page, but below where you list the cities, none are listed for Oregon!
Because I am moving within Portland to a different ZIP code, I attempted to apply twice. Apparently, comcast makes it LOOK as if they offer internetessentials, while telling people in a large metropolitan area, “It looks like you do not meet the eligibility criteria for Internet Essentials. ” OR “It looks like you are in an area not served” OR “It looks like you have already applies”.
That is underhanded of Comcast. Is it just barely on this side of the law?
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
Thanks, VJ. You have discovered an inconsistency in our list. We do, in fact, list Oregon up near the top of the page, but then we list no cities in the section of the page where they should be. We will look into this discrepancy and get back to you.

LOL all I wanted to know is what State/city/county for Internet Essentials. The web site does not off should have drop down box with state and city or county it would be perfect. Apply first only to see if your state offers this or unless they just want you information before saying (I think so)
This site is booked marked Thank you very much for the great information and in details where you not help but to understand.
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
Huh?
Henry says
The Comcast Internet Essentials website does not have a look up feature to determine if you are in their service area. You need to complete the online application and enter your street address. It will then respond if you are located in their service area or not.
If you are concerned about revealing your residence and name before you can determine if you are located in their service area, I can understand that. You are concerned about identity theft. But be aware, that names and addresses can easily be found online anyway. If you are paranoid about getting exposed, I would suggest never to go online at all.
Henry says
I current have PCs for People wireless internet service at $135 per year. This offer would be cheaper than the Sprint service (which appears to max out at about 20 MB/second speed from my area). I know a Comcast branch office just down the road from my home. I wonder how this service will be installed? Same like running some kind of underground cable into the home that connects to a router device? If they have to dig and cut through parts of the house, that may not be a good thing. I will try to find out what exactly the installation service is involved with this company.
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
No, they don’t have to dig anything up, Henry.
Henry says
Hello
Thanks for the clarification. I looked over the Comcast site concerning wifi service and they use a router device to connect to their over the air signal. I have seen the Comcast Xfinity SSID listed on wireless network connection list box on the task bar of the browser. The connection is listed as unsecured(no security type listed). However, I could not connect to it and it sends me to a login screen for Xfinity Comcast portal to sign in after I try to go to any website.

It’s all how you look at life, isn’t it? I explained to my Mother now that she is a senior citizen on very low income after paying taxes her whole life, and having a father, brothers, husband, and son who all did their duty to their country and served in every branch of the military, it’s more than ok for her to get her internet for $9.95 when I have to pay $60.00 for my college aged son to complete his school work. It’s more than OK. When life throws you a tough moment, I hope you’re not kicking people who are trying to help you. If you never need help or feel a need to help others, you’re doing something wrong. That’s the whole point of being here in the first place.

Internet Essentials is 15Mbps, enough to do one bandwidth intensive thing at a time and several non intensive things at a time. So if you wanted to stream a movie in HD on a large screen tv you could, but couldn’t do anything else. But if you wanted to do your homework or work on a project online and your roommate wanted to stream video on phone then you could.

Blah says
Comcast is bullshiting. They say no snap or govt assistance program is available.
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
We’re not sure where you got your information, Blah, but it’s incorrect. Internet Essentials is by far the largest of the low-income internet plans. Comcast has done a great job promoting it and it now serves millions of low-income Americans.
The problem may be the terminology you’re using. Internet Essentials is NOT a government assistance program. It is 100% sponsored by Comcast.
Larry Faso says
Thank you FCC for requiring Comcast to make cheap internet available as a condition for buying NBC. Thank you Comcast for extending your program beyond three years. We advance as a culture from the largess of big corporations. The poor are not as likely to suffer a decline in the quality of life and cause any further difficulties when they are given amenities at no great expense to big business. Abe Lincoln read law books by fireplace light. Comcast may be providing the same incentive by making internet available to the poor.

CheapInternet.com Administrator says
We think the customer service agent was incorrect. You cannot move directly from a full-price Comcast plan to the low-income Internet Essentials internet plan. You must have a break of 90 days in which you do not subscribe to IE. Yeah, that’s horribly inconvenient, but those are the rules.
The good news is that there may be other internet plans available during that gap or even from now on. Click through all the low-income service providers at this link to see which one fits your needs best:

How does a 35 year old with no children that are in school, yet, and that is not low-income, qualify for internet essentials through xfinity??
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
There are a number of low-income internet plans available, Kathy. They each have different eligibility requirements. You should check them all out, but PCs for People is definitely one you should take a look at, because it sounds as if you would qualify for it:
https://www.cheapinternet.com/low-income-internet
Kathy says
The reason why i’m asking, is because my ex husband who is a cabinet maker (his own business) has recently gotten xfinity internet… i’m wondering how he qualified for this program if he has no kids that live with him, they live with me… so if I apply for this program, since I have a child that receives free lunches, will I get approved even tho he’s claiming to have our child ? Can we use the same child for this program but two different addresses ? Or ? How does this work??
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
Congratulations, Kathy. You have just asked a question we’ve never before received. It seems logical that both households should qualify, but we are not 100% sure. Contact customer service and ask them that question. The worst they can say is “No, only one household is eligible.” If that’s the case, you can then determine if you qualify for one of the other plans, such as PCs for People.

This is a load of hot air. Comcast holds seniors hostage to the contract and then 90 days without service. They demand their pound of flesh. This smarmy load you are dishing up is just plain bait and switch to those of us being held hostage by the comcast thieves.

I’m 66 this month, been on SSI for the last 7 yrs. I have RA arthritis was diagnosed with worst than severe RA. I haven’t been on my meds.for around 2 yrs. It cost $4,700.00 a month for my 2 shots plus a couple every prescription meds. Then I have 4 over the counter too. I had to quite working in 2012 because I couldn’t pay my deductible so I couldn’t keep working, then I couldn’t afford the cobra to so my comment husband put me on his job insurance coverage but then he was fired 11/2 yrs later. He has a bad habit of drinking & running around with other woman that likes to to do it too. So I but in for disability which came in 5 months late. So then I had to wait 2 yrs to get Medicare & another 2 yrs to be considered very low income, 135% below. So I was in progress of trying to find a insurance company to cover part D, prescription & have my $4,700.00 a month for my 2 shots at a discount that I could afford to buy pay out of $1,100. income. Well that wasn’t possible. So in a yr I finally was able for Medical & extra help on prescriptions. Then I broke my little born in my lower left leg right above my ankle. That took 3 months to get back on my feet & now it’s to get my information out, test for TB, blood work. So I have to be on the websites of M&M to keep paper work filled out. So all I can afford is my Internet on my phone which is only 5″. I have tried to afford Internet to be able to us my laptop but haven’t. So then I hear about this program, so please help me. I have worked 50 yrs doing payrolls for 2 Citrus Companies. I sure would appreciate it to be able to see what I’m doing. I also got to have a cataract taken off & update my presentation glasses. Thanks if you’ll can really help me. I didn’t plan all those yrs to end up like this. Patricia Selph, nickname Patsy

Hi Patricia I completely understand how you feel for I’m disabled as well however much younger I know it’s a struggle to even live off of the low income Social Security and I do hope with the new programs available that this will be able to help you a little bit financially
first I would need to figure out where you live to find out the cable provider for you
Amazon is now offering Amazon Prime for low-income at a discounted price which includes their movies the TV that music as well as the Kindle library which is full of millions of books as well as groceries and Amazon Prime shipping and much more goodies I personally watch Amazon Prime and I do enjoy it thoroughly I just discovered that I have much more wide variety in my plan then what I even use currently
There also is a low income program that allows you to get a desktop or a laptop for about 150 that also goes through Amazon Prime which is connected with Google and then there is another company as well I just read all this information currently to find out my financial situation of what’s available to me
And also don’t forget that you may be eligible to receive a free government phone cell phone.
I hope at the information that I shared with you is very helpful and most of all I hope financially that it helps just a bit cuz I know the $20 or $40 can make a huge difference within the month I understand pain wise prescription wise Financial wise how you film please take care

Most of these big Corporations don’t care about senior citizens they have to get their internet together with their cable TV or satellite package. All of the promises about low cost internet for seniors or low income households are just a bunch of talk.

Do You Want To Support a Company that has Done This?
[Comcast Paid Civil Rights Groups To Support Killing Broadband Privacy Rules]
For years, one of the greasier lobbying and PR tactics by the telecom industry has been the use of minority groups to parrot awful policy positions. Historically, such groups are happy to take financing from a company like Comcast, in exchange for repeating whatever talking point memos are thrust in their general direction, even if the policy being supported may dramatically hurt their constituents. This strategy has played a starring role in supporting anti-consumer mega-mergers, killing attempts to make the cable box market being more competitive, and efforts to eliminate net neutrality.
The goal is to provide an artificial wave of “support” for bad policies, used to then justify bad policy votes. And despite this being something the press has highlighted for the better part of several decades, the practice continues to work wonders. Heck, pretending to serve minority communities while effectively undermining them with bad internet policy is part of the reason Comcast now calls top lobbyist David Cohen the company’s Chief Diversity Officer – something the folks at Comcast hate when it’s out, by the way.
It’s noted how Congress voted to kill relatively modest, but necessary FCC privacy protections. You’d be hard pressed to find a single, financially-objective group or person that supports such a move. Even Donald Trump’s most obnoxious supporters were relatively disgusted by the vote. Yet this notes that groups like the League of United Latin American Citizens and the OCA (Asian Pacific American Advocates) breathlessly urged the FCC to kill the privacy rules, arguing that snoopvertising and data collection would be a great boon to low income families was told to the FCC that “many consumers, especially households with limited incomes, appreciate receiving relevant advertising that is keyed to their interests and provides them with discounts on the products and services they use.”
Of course, folks like Senator Ted Cruz then used this entirely-farmed support to insist there were “strenuous objections from throughout the internet community” at the creation of the rules, which simply wasn’t true. Most people understood that the rules were a direct response to some reckless and irresponsible privacy practices at major ISPs — ranging from charging consumers more to keep their data private, or using customers credit data to provide even worse customer support than they usually do.
Yes, what consumer (minority or otherwise) wants to pay significantly more money for absolutely no coherent reason?
This kind of co-opting still somehow doesn’t get much attention in the press lately or policy circles, so it continues to work wonders. And it will continue to work wonders as the administration shifts its gaze from gutting privacy protections to killing net neutrality.
FYI, Steve

I have a complaint. I requested this program and unfortunately did have a past due bill from earlier in the year, maybe 6 if anything mo the ago, and was told collections canceled my set up for the day the guy was supposed to cone out, without even notifying me about the situation. Didn’t offer once about being able to set anything up for payment arrangement but still being able to have this program like advised in the paragraphs above. I’m very upset with Comcast and the employees that work there. Never again will I go with this company. AT&T has the same program, so I went with them instead! ?

Comcast followed the rules of the program, which state that you cannot enroll in Internet Essentials if you have an overdue Comcast bill. Hi I am currently using Comcast Internet Essentials. This isn’t a lifeline service is it? Can I get Safelink , or do I have to choose between discounted internet and free cell phone service?
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
No, Internet Essentials is not a Lifeline service. It is an independent low-income internet plan. You can now get bundled cell phone and internet service from Safelink for free, but the amount of internet usage permitted is very limited (500 MB per month).
But depending on where you live, you may be able to get free cell phone service from a Lifeline company like Safelink plus really inexpensive, unlimited internet from a company like PCs for People or 4GCommunity.
Here’s where you can find out more about PCs for People:

Shelley Krill says
Is there a data usage limit on the low income internet
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
Funny you should mention that, Shelley, because we were just searching for that information the other day. Comcast doesn’t call out data limits on the Internet Essential website, so we had to really search to find out that you are limited to 300 GB per month. That should be enough for you to do almost anything you want to do, and as much as you want to do it, on the internet.

i just got off the phone with comcast , i was finishing my aopplication online when it popped up saying i was already a xfinity customer and to call their 180number. i called and was told it looked like a glitch as they could see i had no servvices but as the woman dug deeper she said there was a note from a different department and after talking to them she transferred me to them to have the situation taken care of.when they answered i was told very fast and very confusingly that i could be approved right now with no documents or proof because of a promotion in my area that id been selected for. he said in a thick and fast accented voice that i would get equipment in 3 to 5 days and i was to hook up and call 800 number and it would be activated. when i asked about internet speed he said 1mb something and 1mb upload and 1000mb per month. when i questioned if there was a limit to my internet use a month he faiultered and it was hard to get a straight answer, but when i cornered him about what would happen if i went over the 1000mbs or whatever there called he said i would be charged an extra $20 per gb or something and i said no, that i didnt see any of those details on this website when reading over the details and that i wanted to call arouynd he tried to get me to try it for one month first but i believe after reading this that i would not be able to sign up for another program probably if i did. i had explained to him prevviously that i have two fulltime high school aged college students that are also gamers. im very weary of the fact that they asked for ZERO DOCUMENTS OR PROOF OF LOW INCOME. NO PROOF EVEN THAT I WAS WHO I SAID I WAS OR LIVING WHERE I SAID I WAS
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
That’s so far from the actual Internet Essentials offer that it’s laughable, Heidi. Here’s an excerpt that describes the actual Internet Essentials offering:
The first new approach will offer multi-tier usage allowances that incrementally increase usage allotments for each tier of high-speed data service from the current threshold. Thus, we’d start with a 300 GB usage allotment for our Internet Essentials, Economy, and Performance Tiers, and then we would have increasing data allotments for each successive tier of high speed data service (e.g., Blast and Extreme). The very few customers who use more data at each tier can buy additional gigabytes in increments/blocks (e.g., $10 for 50 GB).
The second new approach will increase our data usage thresholds for all tiers to 300 GB per month and also offer additional gigabytes in increments/blocks (e.g., $10 per 50 GB).

Kandy G. says
2. You cannot have a Comcast bills that is over 12 months past due. However, if you have an overdue bill from just within the last 12 months, Comcast has recently changed the rules and will accept you as an Internet Essentials customer, provided you agree to the payment plan they work up to pay off the late bills.
Am I interpreting the above information on your website correctly? I just called Comcast Internet Essentials which then directed me to the billing department so that I can initiate the payment plan and billing informed me that I must pay the entire past due bill off to them before I can initiate the essentials program. My bill is not more than 4 month old. Is there another department that I should call because Internet Essentials told me that they cannot setup the payment plan while having access to the Internet Essentials program. Thanks.

We understand the regulations exactly as they were explained to you by Comcast’s billing department, Kandy.

They promised us to send a technician to our home to do the installation more than 15 times and have me waiting for half day to one day and nobody show up and nobody took the time to cancel the appointment. NOTHING HAPPENed UNTIL TODAY AFTER CALLING SO MANY TIMES.
ESSENTIALS is a internet program that offer thru the schools and advertising a discount rate for the children in school and my children (3) students are going to the library at least three times a week to make their tasks and even so they are behind in their homework.
Teachers are sending notes because this reason.
COMCAST have sent us a series of invoices FOR SERVICE THAT WE NEVER HAD,
For this amounts (175.00, 204.00, 175.00 and but) to clarify these invoices for a service we have never received, I have had to use many hours, neglecting my work and obligations. WHO IS GOING TO PAY FOR MY TIME ON THIS ABUSIVE SITUATION?
The last time I called was the Friday 14 and we speak with an agent Connie and her answer was that she can offer me a new package for much more money instead of ESSENTIALS.
Please help our family, kids to be more explicit, and somehow intercede for us to solve this impasse and that the children can have this way access to the internet and to complete and to advance in their learning.
Waiting for your communication in the confidence that you will be making the difference on this ABUSIVE SITUATION.
Thank you again for your help,

We really hate situations like this. We’ve been through them ourselves with a different company and it’s incredibly frustrating. There really is no perfect answer for you. In our case, we ended up finding the name of the president of the cable TV company and wrote him a letter just like the one you wrote to us. Within a few days we received a phone call from his assistant and within a few days technicians arrived at our house and installed the service we had been promised for three calendar years.
We could tell you to complain to the Better Business Bureau or to your state’s public utility commission, but we truly think the first thing you should do is to write that letter to the president fo Comcast and a copy to David L. Cohen, Comcast’s Senior Executive Vice President and the guy who runs Internet Essentials. (Sorry, but we don’t know the name of the President of Comcast). We bet you’ll get some action if you do as we say.
But we would love to have you follow up and leave another comment to let us and our readers know how this turns out.

I’m real happy that low-income families can get Internet Essentials so that they can keep up with our ever changing world. It has become a vital-essential tool.

And we’re happy that we can help so many needy families get the internet service they so desperately need.

The Rockford School District has Free lunches for EVERY student. So everyone in that district would quilify? Are the customers that are paying full price for the service taking the hit of that cost. I mean will we be paying more because the entire town gets it at low cost if they apply. I think it should be based on income for that situation. There can be a family that makes over 100k a year and it doesnt matter cause they get free lunch so they can take advantage of the program. I know several people that make good money and are taking advantage of the program just because they can. I think it sucks that they can do that. I would like to see a change.

Larry Newland says
Hi. My name is Larry Newland and I am currently an Xfinity/Comcast customer.I have no phone. My choice was no phone or no electricity. Easy decision. My income is $1,248.90 per month Social Security. I have no other income.
My Comcast account number is 8771 10 339 026****.
I will be 72 years old next month and can barely use this method of communicating with the world. My current bill is $133.65. It is supposed to increase by $40.01 in the future. I live alone with 2 dogs and am on State assistance and food stamps. Can you help me in any way to reduce my TV and internet bill? Illinois state assistance programs are reducing benefits and making it almost impossible to make ends meet. If you can it will be your good deed for the day.
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
First of all, Larry, here’s where you can find a complete list of all the low-income plans available.
https://www.cheapinternet.com/low-income-internet
The problem you face with Comcast is that no current customers are allowed to switch to the company’s low-income plan. Yeah, we know that sounds crazy, but it’s the way Internet Essentials and all the other programs work. That means you’ll need to go without internet for 60-90 days or find another one of the programs shown at the above link. Check them all out to see if you can find one that’s available in your area. Depending on your address, PCs for People might be a good alternative.
Finally, you are paying pretty high internet rates. You should call Comcast’s customer service and ask if they have a cheaper plan. It’s possible that you can reduce your bill considerably by going with fewer TV channels or slower internet speed or both.
Good luck, Larry. You’re exactly the kind of person these programs were intended for.
Sotirakis says
How about cheap internet for is rural people. We need it more to stay connected to the rest the world and no one provided for low income families.
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
Rural people really do get the short end of the stick. It is, though, understandable on some level. Look at it this way: If a cable company lays a mile of cable in a densely populated city, they may sign up 5000 paying customers in that mile. But if they spend the same amount of money to lay a mile of cable in a rural area, they may get only five customers. It’s just not a profitable venture for them and the bottom line is that they area in business to make money.
All that doesn’t make your situation any more tolerable, though. Unfortunately, there’s really nothing we can suggest that may help. Good luck.
Billie Jo Gilroy says
Your rules for low income recipients doesn’t make sense. I struggle each month to try and pay my Internet bill, but to get into your program I have to cancel my service for 3 months. My son needs Internet service and can’t go 3 months without it. I communicate with teachers, counselorso, Dr and so on. I’m unable to go 3 months without contacting his school. I pay 90.00 a month later most of the time because I can’t afford it. I don’t have cable, because I know my kids need Internet service for school and that’s more important. You really need to reconsider how low income can sign up without canceling for 3 months.
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
They’re not “our” rules, Billie Joy. They’re the rules the Federal Communications Commission set up for all the programs that were government-approved. We completely understand what you’re saying and it’s one of the fatal flaws in the program.
However, you might want to check out all the other plans that are available to see if you can qualify for one of them, which would allow you to leave your current service provider and get Internet immediately. Check them out.

The internet essentials program is a great program, however since we have moved (2 years ago) to a different part of town we are no longer in a area thats serviced. I would like to know how we could convince Comcast to service this part of Albuquerque. I have 3 kids in school 2nd, 4th and 6th grades and my oldest daughter in her second year at UNM. I can’t express enough how hard it is not to have internet in our home. There is no way I can afford to put in a regular internet service so having Internet Essentials would be a huge blessing to me and my children. Any ideas or help would be greatly
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
Generally speaking, there’s no way to do what you’d like to do. Most cable companies are granted monopolies in limited areas. For example, if Comcast’s territory in your town extended just to your side of the street and Time Warner’s territory included the other side of the street, they still could not compete with each other. Because their territories are so restricted that one cannot cross the street into the other’s territory without violating the terms of their contracts with the municipality. Make sense?

frustrating spoke with maria at internet essentials i have qualified yet there is another form i must turn in, maria said she would send me that form, two weeks later no form. i called again spoke with Maria. she said she had the wrong address. Si i gave her the address again, two more weeks and nothing, called again guess who answered? yes Maria. once again she said she would send us the form. i said i have no confidence in you sending the form, give my my account number i will do it online! Maria said she could not do that! she can only send out the form.. i ask to speak with her supervisor, i spoke to Oscar, he gave me my account number and said forget the form just send us your daughter report card, and the reduced lunch document from the school. gave us a fax # to send it in. PLease beware with Maria she wont do what she says.

Your internet essentials team needs to be trained on the rules. Private schooled and homeschooled children are not to be excluded. However your people are not aware and have put my niece at a disadvantage. Shame on you Comcast!

Katelyn Cardoza says
I have been with Comcast for a few years. I struggle with bills but the internet was always very important to my children’s learning and my own as I am in online college. I read on here that in order to have the 9.99 a month service, I have to not have internet for three months. I can not afford to not have internet services for that long. Is there any way that I can be eligible for this service without being without for that long.
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
Yeah, we completely understand what you’re saying, Katelyn. It’s a real flaw with the Internet Essentials program and many people find themselves in the same situation. Take a look at all the other programs that are available to see if you qualify for any of them. If any of them are available in your area, that would allow you to switch to another provider without any gap in service. Here’s the list:

https://www.cheapinternet.com/low-income-internet
Good luck to you and your mom.
Kay Madrid says
Comcast, as always finds a way to screw both regular college students and those on disability, because we don’t need Internet? It’s bad enough that they screw people on basic cable prices, but then they leave one of the largest populations out. Seniors aren’t always the most interested in technology, but those on disability, who don’t want to live life that, might have higher aspirations, but having meger budgets makes that impossible especially if you’re single. You’re screwing up as always Comcast!
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
We know a lot of people absolutely hate Comcast, but we think they’ve done an admirable job of expanding access to low-income Internet. At least Comcast puts a lot of time, effort and money into its program, which is more than we can say for CenturyLink’s Internet Basics. Comcast has steadily expanded the groups that are eligible for Internet Essentials and we expect them to continue expanding it. Hopefully, it will soon include regular college students, the disabled, and even veterans.
elizabeth chud says
Well i think it is unfair to disabled people, who have been paying the sky rocketing prices and told u cannot qualify because you have internet already, by the way i wasnt told the essentials was offered nor did they even meantion it, so i feel im being ripped off. Somethinv i will be taking up with my attorney general office. Immediatly. I intend to directly after reading this on filing that complaint, since ive just have internet the past 6 months. So someone should have said this was available and dicnt. Not to mention it is piss poor slow. You have to love how honest comcast is to its clients. This could have helped me a great deal.
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
We hear you, Elizabeth. It does seem unfair that a low-income Comcast customer can’t automatically switch over to the low-cost Internet Essentials page if they qualify for it. Unfortunately, Comcast requires that you cannot have been a customer for 90 days. We’re big fans of the Internet Essentials program, but this regulation is a big problem for a lot of customers.
Jennifer Clayborn says
I would like to apply for the internet essentials program. My daughter attends Richwoods High School in Peoria, IL, but if I have to cancel my current service for 3 months to qualify, she would not have access until around December when school starts here on August 17th, Also, as I am not working and have exhausted my unemployment, I will not be able to afford my current service, pay rent and utilities too. What other options do you have?

I’M A 74 YEAR OLD WOMAN OF VERY LOW INCOME, THE PRICE I’M CHARGED FOR COMCAST BASIC TV AND INTERNET IS THE LOWEST PRICE I COULD FIND AND IT’S CAUSING ME TO GIVE UP THINGS LIKE FOOD. TO PAY FOR IT. I’M ALONE, HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD. I CALLED AND TRIED TO GET IT LOWERED , WAS TOLD THAT SAN JOSE DOES NOT OFFER SUCH REDUCED RATES AS OTHER CITIES?????? HOW CAN I GET A LOWERED BILL, A SENIOR DISCOUNT LIKE I DO ON MY UTILITIES. PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHO TO CONTACKT, THANK YOU
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
We think what Comcast meant, Rosalie, is that they will not allow a current customer to switch over to the low-priced, low-income Internet plan. Seems crazy, but those are the rules.
That being the case, you should check out the other low-income Internet plans to see if one of them will work for you. We’d urge you to check out PCs for People in particular. As long as San Jose is in Sprint’s national network (and it’s hard to imagine that a large, important city like San Jose wouldn’t be in the network), PCs for People would work for you. Here’s a link to our page that lists all the low-income plans:
https://www.cheapinternet.com/low-income-internet
Good luck, Rosalie.
Rebecca Leal says
Just wondering if the program for the low income internet is extended to a low income college student as well? My daughter will start Georgia northwestern in August and we really can’t afford to have internet right now since it’s more expensive.
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
There are currently a couple pilot programs for students (including college students), but none of the results are in yet, so none of them have been rolled out nationally yet.

I am 17 I am not in school . And my mother and I are in a low income home. I need Internet to get back into school so I can find a job and still be in school . I need to know if we would be still eligible .
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
First of all, good for you for wanting to get back into school, Jade.
Your question is one we’ve never been asked before. The Internet Essentials rules say at least on child in the household must be “eligible” for the National School Lunch Program. Since you’re not currently in school, we’re not sure if you are eligible based on your family income or ineligible because you’re currently not in school. The only way to answer that question would be to speak to the Comcast Internet Essential customer service team.
However, there are many other programs other than Internet Essentials for which you may qualify (if you live in the places where those programs are offered). Check them out here:
https://www.cheapinternet.com/low-income-internet
Good luck. We hope you can qualify for one of the programs, Jade, because getting back into school is so important for your future.

We have questions for you, Melissa. What triggered the increase in price? What did customer service say when you called to question your billing? Are you aware of the following Internet Essential Terms & Conditions? Do any of them apply in your case?
Here are the Terms & Conditions we were referring to. We found them on the Internet Essential website:
3. You will no longer be eligible to participate in the program if (i) you no longer have at least one child living in your household who is eligible to participate in the NSLP; (ii) you fail to maintain your Comcast account in good standing; (iii) Comcast ceases to provide the Covered Service to your location; or (iv) your account opened under the program is closed. A change in address may result in your account being closed, even if you continue to receive Comcast services at a different address. Program participation also may be terminated if the Covered Service is upgraded, altered or changed by you for any reason. If you are no longer eligible for the program, but continue to receive the Covered Service from Comcast, regular rates and any other applicable terms and conditions will apply to the Covered Service.
4. If you participate in the program, you will (i) receive the Covered Service for $9.95 per month (plus applicable taxes); (ii) have the one-time option to purchase a computing device for under $150.00 (plus applicable taxes)** while enrolled in the program; and (iii) have access to Web-based, print and classroom-based training programs at no additional cost. You also will not be charged standard installation, activation or equipment rental fees for the Covered Service. The price of the Covered Service is limited to a single outlet, basic modem and Wi-Fi router. Additional charges apply for custom installation, additional outlets for the Covered Service, other XFINITY services and service appointments.

My husband and I have had your service for over 1 1/2 .We have custody of our 3 grandchildren. My 16 granddaughter uses the internet on a daily basis for school. We were told that we could get the Internet cheaper through comcast. I make under $30,000 a year and my grandchildren get free lunch. When my husband went to the office to ask the about it they responded that the child has to be in college. I read the information on line and says nothing to that affect. My granddaughter is high honors and intends to go to college .She works hard to keep up her grades and is Appling for scholarships but anything we could do to help her along the way would be awesome. I shall wait for a reply thank you for your time.

If you’re willing to jump through hurdles and deal with the poor customer service, then go for it. I qualify through my college and it took me over a week to even get my application in. The website is horrible and the pages go no where and the customer service is obviously in india and on my first three calls, they hung up on me after 15 mins and on the fourth call, the guy submitted my application which I cant check or find proof of because of the horrible website. At this point I don’t care if i get it or not only because dealing with Comcast customer service always throws me into a rage and I’m far from someone who gets upset easily. I probably just catch the bus down to school every time i have to get something done but I guess thats one of the pit falls of not able to spend an obscene amount of money for Comcast service.

After reading this article I went to cox website and someone approached me via instant message. When I questioned about this Internet Essentials for my 80 year old mom they told me it was $39.99. When I mentioned this ad they had nothing to say about it but call customer service. I thought they were customer service? They gave me a 1-800 number to call but they are closed right now. My mom did tell me she previously called cox about cheap internet and they told her they did not have cheap internet. HELP!

Jamie says
Okay if you are going to get this and you can get on internet on your phone or somewhere have them email you the application instead. You will get the email in a day then you can print the application at a library then scan it on your phone using an app/camera and then email it back to them they approved it in one day. Also do not wait for the start up package its nothing important you can make an appointment before you get it once you are approved. Oh and there is a start up fee of $30 if there’s not an existing wire already and if there is one and its very far from the location you have your computer you will have to buy a cable.

The minimum broadband download speeds now begin at 25Mbps.
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
Yes, we understand that the FCC has changed the definition recently from 5 to 25. And the low-income American who is desperate for Internet access loses. 5 Mbps for for $10 a month is a Godsend for people who cannot afford more. We so disagree with the FCC, we published this article on the subject.

Send me a petition to sign up about the Essential program. It sounds like it is only for individuals that just have children. In my eyes, and wallet, Comcast has overpriced a lot of their services, including the internt. I cannot afford to have internet. I think I should apply to all of us with low income and not just individuals with children. Please don’t get me wrong I love children and respect responsible parents! I just want to say that I am under the poverty level by close to 200%. I like having the internet and really need it cheaply. Living in CO. Thanks for your time!

CheapInternet.com Administrator says
That’s an interesting question. Are you saying that you are in a high school class, where you would qualify for the National School Lunch Program? It has to be high school or under. If you are, even though you don’t “have a child that qualifies for school lunch” it seems like you would be eligible. But we can’t say for sure. Please let us know if you are able to get it.

CheapInternet.com Administrator says
Yes, they don’t need to be in school lunch, just have to be eligible for it.
Matthew O. says
I am a 24-year-old Aspie who still lives with my mother, who turns off the internet every weeknight at 11:30 PM (12:30 AM during DST). My income is no greater than $7000 a year and I am unable to find a job. I came close once but put my college education, ongoing since fall of 2008, before that one opportunity because I thought it was just as important. My grades have been anything but poor.
I can understand my mother shutting the internet off that early on nights before I have class in the morning, but on those lonely nights that are followed by a morning of no classes I will need internet access for relaxing entertainment before I go to bed. I have been looking for free-to-cheap unlimited internet access for myself to use independently. So far, almost everything I Googled my place of residence (in Huntington Beach, CA) did not qualify for. Almost everything it did was too expensive. I took a look at the service mentioned in this article but it seems to think the applicants are parents with children which I am not. I cannot lie to them. I cannot pretend to be a parent. If I told my mom about this, it is likely she would say no or would try to control it when I am the one who rightfully owns and pays for the access.
How can I be independent when I can’t even afford an apartment. I can’t even find acceptable work around my school schedule (work that does not involve janitorial duties in which you have to mentally keep track of what you have cleaned and what you haven’t). What am I going to do?
Angelica says
Hi, I am an 18 year old student and senior in High School. I get reduced/free lunch at school because recently my parents had kicked me out with no reason. I am currently homeless, but working to get in an apartment. I have low income with my job, and I am currently in Welfare. I graduate at the end of the year, but still have plans to attend college after High School. I am having to support myself, and I need low-cost Internet for my school work and job. Will I be able to still qualify for this program, even though I am the student signing up, and even though I am graduating at the end of this school year but still having plans to continue my education? Would this program also let me have the ability to have a telephone/ home phone with this low-cost Internet program?
It would be greatly appreciated to know these things and help me with my plans to support myself, while continuing my education. If I do not qualify for this program, I would also appreciate other low-cost Internet programs that I could qualify for.
Please and Thank You,
Angelica
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
We’re sorry to hear of your situation. That’s a good question about if it has to be your parents signing up for Internet Essentials. We would think that you would be able to. If you have any problems try working with someone at your school, who often work directly with Internet Essentials and other companies.
You can also try Internet Basics (see here), which has other low-income requirements.
As for the phone, you can probably get a free phone from the government. (See here).

No way around it, it’s a hard and fast rule.
J Delacruz says
I am disabled and get Food Stamps, would I be able to qualify without kids because I am a low income disabled person. If not why because I am in need to be able to connect with the internet and just because my kids are grown should not discriminate me.
Thank you
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
No, you will not be able to. It’s not discrimination, it’s simply the way the program works, meant to help kids in school. You can check other programs, including Internet Basics, which is created for low-income in general.

I want to know if the internet speed offered by Comcast in internet essentials is good for streaming movies like on Netflix
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
Yes it is, but you could possibly have some issues on High-Definition movies. The Internet Essentials download speed i 5.0 Megabits per second.
Below are the Internet download speed recommendations per stream for playing movies and TV shows through Netflix.
0.5 Megabits per second – Required broadband connection speed
1.5 Megabits per second – Recommended broadband connection speed

Dear “Cheap Internet Administrator”,
Why doesn’t Comcast give a tinker’s dam (look it up) about OLDER AMERICANS?
My husband and I are both 56 years old, and he is disabled due to a heart attack and a stroke suffered while undergoing open heart surgery. My husband makes $1472 a month on SS Disability, and the only job I’ve been able to find after months of searching is a part-time graveyard shift at a local convenience store making just over minimum wage.
WE WOULD LIKE TO HAVE INTERNET TOO, but at our income level, we can afford neither TV nor internet service, and it would really help pass the time for my husband if he could watch TV or play online games. Most senior citizens in our area are in the same boat as are we, financially…. we gave this country the best years of our lives, and now we are forgotten, but I guess you folks at Comcast/Time Warner don’t care about that, do you, you stinking money-grubbing corporate pigs?
Have a nice day wallowing in your profits, and I hope your company ROTS.

We’re not Internet Essentials. You’ll need to contact them directly. Two months is obviously too long, so something must be wrong.

We wouldn’t say so.

What’s low income how much is toomuch not to qualify has low income family of 3 children plus mom and dad
Cheap Internet Administrator says
There is no income requirement. It’s based solely upon if a child is in the National Free Lunch Program. Of course you can’t get into that if your income is too high.

My son just turned 5 and is supposed to start school in the fall The school district has the worst scores and stats I would prefer to home school him. I have cut out so much already the only thing we have is internet but things are going slow money is getting tighter and tighter. it would be great if i could get internet for 10 bucks a month and use the left over for school supplies. i am seeing that my options are to put my child in a horrible school environment just to get a break
Lee Goldman says
We are presently on Social Security and find our internet service $14.95
is a little more than our budget can afford after paying our utilities,
food, and medicines. We would really appreciate a lower price service
if at all possible. We primarily keep in touch with our family up North
thru our internet computer service which is also exceptionally very
slow. Please advise us as to our chances of hooking up to a
less expensive internet computer service.

‘Government concerned: Not enough needy Americans signing up for broadband programs’
Comcast has a lot of rules-eliminating everyone I know for 1 reason or another.
No service for last 90 days. so if you have cable, home phone or internet (that u cant afford) U cant have this deal! if you dont have these services (me) its because you probably couldnt afford their services, fell behind & owe them $ (so they say). So if your poor & need this service from Government via the middle man (comcast) TOO BAD-you cant have!
‘In addition, you cannot have been a Comcast internet subscriber in the last 90 days and you cannot have any overdue Comcast bills or unreturned equipment.’
I appreciate the Governments efforts. This is a deal my son can really benifit from I do have internet(not Comcast) but the $50+month could be better spent clothing his butt!
MJ Brewer says
My situation is extremely complicated in that I have an elementary student who does get free lunch, but her brother has aspergers and requires home school. Since I didn’t know about this project, we’ve been going without necessary food for an adequate diet to afford internet for him. We don’t have television services, only internet and basic phone.
Our bill just popped about $25/month, along with a couple of other bills, and we’re struggling with hospital bills. I don’t even have a cell phone, but we did see that on another page and will apply today. The point is, I cannot imagine spending the next three months at the library so my son can attend school, aside from it not even opening until 10:00 a.m.
What can I do? Surely there’s something!
Thank you,
MJ

If Comcast employed US citizens to answer phones, fill out order forms on computers, at home, near 0 training or education required, then?.. Almost every phone and internet contact with this US company is Out Sourced to other countries, I spent 2 hrs on the phone ordering service for my landlord, a Marine Veteran. When finally done, the salesman asked me “Do you wonder where I am?” Your asking me if I wonder where you are? I asked “Yes” he said. Well, sure, Yes. “I am in Pakistan and its 3:30 am”. It had taken me an hour to figure out that each dept. rep. has a ‘play-book’ they read from and only that. They have no answers at all. They can only repeat the question they ask you. Things went quicker as “would you please repeat that” “I cant understand you”? the one question I asked

I have 2 honors students who are required to do most of their homework online and must take some entire classes online due to budget cuts. We cannot go to a local library to use their internet so I am required to pay a min of $420 a year for internet at home and this is the cheapest I have found. My kids qualify for free lunch and none of these low cost or free internet services are available in our zip code, 34638. This bill is the highest bill we have aside from food for the household and I have no idea why it costs so much in this country just for internet service. My brother lives in France and he says nowhere he has lived in Europe has he ever paid more than 9 euros a month for high speed. Education apparently is a priority there. Any suggestions???

My wife is totally blind, i have three heart problems and had four strokes, we live on SSI and SS. We still have a mortgage and all the bills which come with home ownership, yet we do not complain.
I believe more of the above people need to learn how to budget, you need to learn how to spend less then what you get. Why do people “need” 150 tv channels? We get 36 for free.
I watch the news and get out in to my garden or play with the grand kids and make toys for them. Learn limits, spend more time with your spouse, or kids, or friends; get away from the freebie mentality, anything worth having is worth paying for it. I suppose i’ll be shot down quick, i grew up in a different time, we had no electricity, no plumbing, no car, no heater, there was no welfare, no freebies, yet we were happy.

So if you don’t have a kid tough? It’s very hard to find a job without Internet but I suppose Comcast figures the more money you take out of the community the more you qualify? So I should have a child I can’t afford, get snap and free lunches as well as Medicaid and then I’ll deserve to be able to find a job, become a taxpayer again and maybe even a customer buy some of their more outrageously price products?
If they offered a program to families WITHOUT a child qualified for free food at school they would have been sued up the wazoo but discriminate against people who won’t bring a child into their lives until they can afford it and no one cares. Somehow this system is getting more and more backwards. Being responsible in this century just doesn’t pay.

I have had a safelink phone for about a year, but didn’t know about the reduced cost internet service at all. I feel that these wonderful gifts that are out there for those of us who are disabled are not advertised very well and we have to go out and do our own how to do things right and what is available to us. Our minds are on the diseases and pain we suffer, not what is available to make our lives easier. I wish someone would organize a page with all the great discounts that low income people could participate in, each with credits so that when you go back to work, the more credits you have, the longer you get to keep servicess as a reassurance that we won’t just be dropped on our head when we start a new part of our life. My biggest fear is that if I go back to work and my benefits don’t start for 3 months, or if I don’t even get benefits, I won’t be able to afford to go see the doctor or pay out of pocket because all my benefits will be taken away. I didn’t ask to be disabled, nor did I ask to live without the many things that other people take for granted. I would love to have an updated IPhone or a new laptop, but by the time I would be able to get one of those, it will be obsolete. Martin Luther King had a dream…what about MY dream? If you can help me, I would really appreciate it!

I’m also on SS and Comcast never offered any low price internet or cable to me although I’ve explained about my finances. Had to do some searching and still am paying high price for modem and box for t.v. Although found low internet and cable it still takes almost $100.00 a month for these two bills by the time they add the boxes and all thier so called taxes and fcc fees etc it wipes a good portion out. The Gov., promised free boxes when they first allowed t.v. over the air wave programs to be removed but if you have a HD t.v. you get charged almost 10.00 a month for the box and 7.50 for the modem. We cannot win. Most of us have to pay or give it up.

Joel says
WTH?!…cut the cable! My mom is elderly too, barely tops 1 k a month in income, retirement included. She still works. She doesn’t have cable. Cut the cable and then you might be able to afford the internet. Yours is not a sob story. No one needs cable to live. That is a luxury item. I make 68K and I don’t have cable. But I have internet, cus I work from home and I need it for work. Otherwise, I would go where it’s free.

Its not right that my son has to be without Internet access for school for 90days because we currently have Comcast but have to get rid of it because it is too expensive for me a single mom who is living on food stamps, child support and unemployment for now. PLEASE READ the article Internet Basic is NOT thru Comcast it is thru Century Link and looks to be Verizon FIOS so IF you have FIOS in your area I am going to take a stab in the dark and say Century is not available to you. But you put in your Zip and then your address after you click the lets get started Starburst…
Now if you get the Netbook for $150 you have to stay signed up for 2yrs 1st yr 9.95 & free modem then 13th month goes to $14.95 + modem or you can purchase modem thru them Internet speed is 1.5 that is SLOW if you ask me and that is as fast as it will get it says will usually run 15% slower than 1.5 AND there is no guarantee AND if it doesn’t live up to your expectations – it goes down – it is slow – it is always dropping – Tuff OH OH Yea I ALMOST forgot EVERY YEAR you have to be in the SAME finacial position you are in when you got the service aka you must qualify or you owe $$$
chris brown says
hey this is not fair that u have to be over 90 days off of comcast to use this low income program as ofright now i will be loosing cable and internet because of our finacial situation we are currently on comcast and they should work with its coustomers we follow under three of the listed programs u need to be on and cetury link requires u to pay for a modem lease some kinda connection fee shipping fee and taxes on top of that for the first month bill if u install its 50.90 if u have someone come out its anoth 30.00 you are pretty much stuck with comcast
Maralee K. says
It irritates me when they talk about ‘blazing fast’ internet speeds of 1.5Mbps as if this was something special. The ENTIRE country of S. Korea has FREE internet for all its citizens at an astounding 38Mbps (minimum): some areas are getting up to 58Mbps! They also made it their goal to have 100% literacy & are now at 98% literacy for ALL citizens (w/students required to learn 2 languages by 5th grade – Korean & English) – ditto India in this type program – whereas the US’s had an official program to ‘dumb down’ its citizens since 1970. (Download & read the FREE internet book by C. Iserbyt, Ronald Reagan’s Sr. adviser: “the Deliberate Dumbing Down of America”) It’s working, too. We’ve dropped from 94% literacy in 1970 to just under 50% in 2011. This means 1:2 U.S. citizens can’t read/write at a 5th grade level!!! Other nations’ crime rates’ve dropped & we have THE largest prison population in the world at a staggering cost of 112 BILLION/yr. Wonder why our jobs are going overseas & crime is rising? It’s no accident.
Miller says
This is about Internet not the US and their illiteracy. The crime rate and literacy comes from morals and values not being taught to children and parents not taking time to make school a priority. — and NOTHING is free, someone pays for it. FYI, learned that in economics. Bet I’m younger than you and definitely not illiterate for having to pay for Internet or going to school in the US. 🙂
chris brown says
pretty shur it comes from property taxes or what ever fee they have to pay in their country every year

This web site below will tell you about the updates on who gets the grant money. I have been looking for internet for 3 days and cannot find anything affordable. My eyeballs are soooo tired. Comcast does not have a low income program without you having a child, and their 19.99 goes up after 6 months nearly double. Verizon no longer has dsl and switched to min $69.99/mo for Fios internet only. Hughes is expensive too. Dish and Directtv are expensive, and I don’t know if you can get internet only without tv except with wildblue. Plugin wireless usb prepaid sticks/hotspots/svc are expensive $50/mo etc. Wireless phone companies have so many contracts and overage fees and are expensive, and hey I can’t afford a monthly wireless phone so I have safelink. Verizon has a $19 phone only svc you can get Lifeline assistance on (do web search for lifeline application and pick your state to fill out form), but you have to order dial up internet svc through another provider, which are all 56k slow, and if you get Verizon’s $15 measured rate they can’t guarantee they will have a local number avail, so you may be charged for any calls over 30/mo or out of local area code. Centurylink in south FL, does honor the Lifeline discount, you need to ask and apply for it, but still their phone svc is 30+/mo so not cheap if you want their internet too. Apparently you can’t get dial up internet without ordering landline phone service. So I have only 2 choices, pick expensive comcast or expensive verizon, and worse, they teamed up so if you screw up your bills and leave, you have nothing. Verizon will put fraud charges on after your final bill and ruin your credit, and comcast will take your deposit if you don’t return their equipment. On the go broadband cards are too expensive for long term or all day surfing for jobs, for a laptop. Can’t get landline ATT here either, except wireless, but have you seen how much those iphones are?! I don’t need phone service or tv, only internet, so why should I have to pay $60/mo for a live wire? I am on SNAP because there isn’t much work here in FL and it’s min wage. I can’t get anything on free wifi hotspots for the palm trees, unless I drive a half hour to mcdonalds and sit in a parking lot, and the rv campgrounds are wep. We need more little companies, more choices! Maybe some point to point hotspots?? Don’t think I didn’t beg and grovel comcast to come up with a low income plan… well, they didn’t. ps-If you have high speed internet you can stream tv for free and cut the cable.

I’m not sure about all the previous comments. This program works like it should but not easy to find the correct procedure.
New generation should have access to the internet. That applies to schools, libraries, churches and the most important our homes. The ones that can not afford it should be sponsored somehow. Comcast and Federal Government makes that happened. I know they (Comcast) do this because of the FCC regulations that force them to do it, regulating big corporations mergers like NBC Universal and Comcast. For now it’s available for anyone that has a child in school that receives reduced or free lunches.

My younger brother, sister and I all three are on the low income free school lunches deal. I told my parents about this and it seems like they are interested… This would really help me with allot of school work and keep the kids entertained. Allot of people havnt yet realized how important enternet is becomng to families with kids in school. not trying to seem like I want something for nothing but I do hope the enternet quality being promised in this article is actually what you get. That and I hope its available in my area. Any way I can ask if it is without saying where I live on this post?
Jeanne says
I would like to enrole in this program, but the web sites just takes you in circles.
Ana says
The obvious or underlying theme in the responses is the frustration with the child-on-school-lunch requirement. WHY in the world would the companies have a requirement so specific that most low-income Americans can’t qualify? Just because you don’t have children doesn’t mean you’re not just as desperate for help and just as determined to better yourself. In fact, people on school lunch programs are already taking advantage of a safety net, but they’re not necessarily the poorest. The poorest now seem to be people in their 50s and beyond.
Guess I’ll try to look elsewhere — wherever that is.
Joel says
Really? You are gripping because we are helping low income families? Did it ever occur to you that this is because kids can’t just get up and go to the library, starbucks, mcdonalds, parks, or other place that offers free internet? If you are an adult, and you cannot get your lasy self off your chair to go to the library, then you have problems. I know what the naysayers are going to say. But thinkabout this. Before the net was popular (that wasn’t long ago, this became popular in 1995 during the time of America Online) and you wanted to read free books and read periodicals without having to pay for them, where would you HAVE to go?
Exactly.
steph says
Well, in my area comcast is the devil of internet providers. They need to have rediculose restrictions or they would actually help people who need it. Statistically people with kids, are more social and will tell more people about what a great things that company is doing with them. For me it’s them or att only…
Jenniferlea78 says
The KIDS NEED THE INTERNET TO GRADUATE AND COMPETE IN THE REAL WORLD!!! Are you that dense really? Wow! You should be REALLY thankful that they do need the internet because if they didn’t then there probably wouldn’t be ANY programs willing to help your SELF SERVING AND SELFISH ASS OUT in the first place!!! Do yourself a favor next time, and try to actually read the information THAT IS SO READILY AVAILABLE FOR YOU TO READ ON THE WEBSITE! THERE ARE TWO PROGRAMS …one of which will help someone like you out! WHAT KIND OF A LOW RENT PERSON WOULD THROW THE KIDS UNDER THE BUS LIKE THAT??!!…..TRULY DISPICABLE, REALLY. I WOULDN’T TAKE YOUR BUTT TO THE LIBRARY EITHER! YOU SOUND PRETTY NEGATIVE AND MISERABLE.

I’m curious– we don’t qualify for free lunches but reduced lunches. Does that still qualify us for Comcast’s internet essentials program?
Cheap Internet Administrator says
No, Lauren, that does not count.
Stacy says
I was just on Comcast’s Internet Essentials website and it says families with a child who receives reduced price lunches may be eligible, too, so I would go ahead and call whichever program covers your area. The most you’ll lose is a 5 minute phone call.

What about people who are caretakers for elderly relatives who’s income or employment has been effected. The unifying theme for these programs requires that you have children. But there are a significant amount of americans who are careing for elderly/or disabled individuals which can be every bit as time consuming and financially exhaustive as those with children. Not to mention the endless research required to try to find programs that are specific to their retirement status, health problems, and social programs that are income sensitive. Alot of women of a specific generation trusted that the government would always protect them and now we find elderly women with not so supportive retirement alternatives who don’t qualify for social security or social programs because of technicalities. Where is there help for people in my situation? My aunt is eternally at the threshold according to beaurocrats but not beyond it enough to keep her own head above the water, and not below it enough to qualify for anything. The middle is a crappy place to be. sorry for the downer guys, just need to vent some frustration.

My son attends a free public charter school that does not have a standard kitchen (it’s only a “warming kitchen”) so therefore no state lunch program. We are on TANF and Medicaid and waiting for unemployment but live in the Comcast service area and unfortunately a high cost of living area..Key West. Is having a child on the free school lunch program the only consideration to apply for the Internet Essentials program? Thank you for your time.

Juanita, I too have AT&T but not UVerse. I have the regular broadband. They raised my bill from 38$ to 42$ without any notice or explaining why! My only other option for internet service is Comcast which is more expensive. I live off a disability income. I would like to see a low cost service for seniors (I’m 57) and not only families with kids. I do love it that these programs are available though!
Cheap Internet Administrator says
Leslie, Did you try the Internet Basics plan. It’s not related to children. Just financial condition.
Danielle says
I also would like to see a $9.95 program for the seniors, too! I have Verizon’s double play for $49.99.
However with inside wire maintenance for $8.99, plus taxes & fees, my bill comes up to $74.31. After one year, the router is mine. If a program comes out for someone like us, I’d hop on it, myself. Like you, I also get money from the government.
mojo says
I would like to not pay for your program, but I don’t seem to have that option.
Cheap Internet Administrator says
Not everything is free, mojo.
