Basic-Internet.com is an internet service provider that offers low-cost, high-speed internet services to help bridge the digital divide. Its website says, “We look to close the digital literacy gap by providing affordable Internet service & computers to low income families.” Basic-Internet.com uses the T-Mobile network and provides Internet services throughout the United States and Canada wherever that network is available. It offers two plans: One for $10 per month and another, more robust plan for $20 per month.
To be absolutely honest, these are not our favorite low-income Internet plans, because they cost more and give you less than many other plans from other companies, but if nothing else is available in your area, they’re better than nothing.
Two Basic-Internet.com plans
Basic-Internet.com offers two different plans depending on how much data you use. Here’s a brief description of both plans.
The Starter Plan
$10 per month (plus taxes)
You’re allowed 1.2 GB data per month at 4G speed. If you exceed the allotted data in any billing cycle, your service will throttle down to a slower speed then reset to the higher speed again at the beginning of the next billing cycle.
Here’s something to pay attention to. The company warns that “Movie streaming is not recommended for the 1.2GB plan, as it may cause users to exceed the total allocated monthly 4G data allowance, causing service to throttle down to slower speeds until the next month when the data allowance resets.”
And then there are some costs you won’t be required to pay with any other low-income Internet plan. A set-up fee of $73.23 to be exact. They’ll charge you $39 for a hotspot, $20 for shipping, $10 for the first month of the plan, and another $4.23 in taxes.
Like we said, it’s better than nothing, but it doesn’t cost nothing.
The Starter Plus Plan
$20 per month (plus taxes)
You’re allowed 3.2 GB data per month at 4G speed. If you exceed the allotted data in any billing cycle, the service will throttle down to a slower speed then reset to the higher speed again at the beginning of the next billing cycle.
The upfront cost? $84.13 which includes a hotspot for $39, shipping of $20, the first month of the plan for $20 and taxes of $5.13.
How to qualify for Basic-Internet.com
This is very good news. Anyone can qualify. To repeat, anyone. Unlike many of the other low-cost Internet plans, you do not need to participate in any other government assistance to qualify for Basic-Internet.com.
Like we said, it may cost a little more and it may be a little slower than all the others, but qualification is much simpler.
In fact, the only thing you need to qualify is the $73.23 or $84.13 in your checking account to pay the upfront costs.
