Two years into the Internet Essentials program, Comcast just announced that it is now bringing high speed internet access to 17,000 people in 4300 families across Virginia.
Comcast Vice President of Government and Community Relations Donna Rattley Washington (we’re still wondering how Comcast fits such a looooong title onto a business card) joined Chesterfield Board of Supervisors Chairman Dorothy Jaeckle, Chesterfield School Board Member Carrie Coyner and Principal of Scott Elementary School Joan Temple, to talk about Internet Essentials.
“As Internet Essentials enters its third year, Comcast remains fully committed to ensuring more low-income American families have access to the same opportunities as other families who are online at home, and we’re making great strides,” Rattley Washington noted. “Compared to a year ago we have more than doubled the number of families in Virginia who are now able to complete school assignments, access government resources, apply for jobs and scholarships and pay bills at home.”
“Broadband has quickly become an essential part of how we live, how we are educated and how we conduct business,” Principal Temple enthusiastically added. “We are pleased that our partnership with Comcast will help create opportunities for success for the students and parents we serve in the Greenleigh community.”
Internet Essentials has grown rapidly in the last two years. In the first six months of this calendar year, approximately 70,000 low-income families enrolled. But that’s just the beginning. Comcast has also distributed more than 18,000 low-cost computers, provided computer training for almost 20,000 people.
In addition to bringing low-cost, high-speed internet to more than one million people across the nation, Internet Essentials continues to enhance its service. This year, it’s offering higher upload and download speeds, made the enrollment process simpler, expanded eligibility, created a simple online application tool, and more.
Internet Essentials is really doing a tremendous job in the areas served by Comcast. If you live in one of those areas, find out more about how Internet Essentials can put you on the right side of the digital divide.
