Frontier Communications now offers low-income internet for $10 per month

$50/MONTH DISCOUNT ON ALL INTERNET: For a limited time only, EVERY internet service provider is now offering government-mandated discounts of up to $50 per month towards broadband service plus one-time discounts of up to $100 to purchase a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from participating providers. Enroll now to get these great benefits.

It takes a little math to figure out how the price gets down to just $10 per month, but that’s the bottom line with Frontier’s low-income Lifeline internet plan.

Here’s how it works: Frontier intro plan starts at about $20 per month. Then they apply a monthly Lifeline discount of $9.25 per month, which reduces your price to about $10 per month. That makes Frontier’s price competitive with with other low-income programs such as Comcast’s Internet Essentials.

Frontier offers this special low-income internet deals in Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin. (Application requirements vary by state, so make sure you check out those requirements before you apply.)

Only one Lifeline discount is allowed per household. So if a husband and wife or a brother and sister or two roommates living in the same household may not each receive the Lifeline discount. On top of that, a household can receive the Lifeline discount on either a cell phone or an internet plan, but not both.

Two pricing options

Frontier offers two different approaches to its Lifeline internet program.

Flat Rate Bundle (includes unlimited local calls)

    LifeLine Flat rate* $6.84
    Affordable Broadband $13.99
Your TOTAL low price per month* $20.83
Less your monthly Lifeline discount -$9.25
    Actual monthly price $11.58

    *For Unlimited Local Calls

Measured Rate Bundle

    LifeLine Flat rate* $3.66
    Affordable Broadband $13.99
Your TOTAL low price per month* $17.65
Less your monthly Lifeline discount $-9.25
    Actual monthly price $8.40

    * Includes 60 minutes of Local Calling. Additional Local Calls are billed at $0.08/minute, plus additional voice minutes.

Frontier does not require you to sign a long-term contract. However, you should keep in mind that the price will increase after your first year of service. For example, we anticipate that the price for Frontier’s cheapest plan will jump up to $25 and some change.

What else is included? Frontier says you’ll get internet speeds of up to 6 Mbps which is more than you need for basic internet browsing, searching and email. They will also include a free wifi router.

Free Chromebook included in some areas

Frontier works with a non-profit organization called Human I-T, a nonprofit, to offer free Chromebook computers for its Lifeline customers. That’s worth repeating: Free computers.

Frontier and Human I-T emphasize that their Chromebook is not available in every area, and the offer is available for a limited time only. But it’s a great offer and definitely worth checking out.

Who is Frontier Communications?

Frontier Communications is one of the nation’s largest internet service providers. They offer service in mostly rural areas of 29 states.

Frontier

According to BroadbandNow.com, “Aside from some dead areas in far western states like Wyoming, Colorado, and Kansas, Frontier has availability in most of the country, including California, Florida, Connecticut, and 26 other states. They also have “Fios” fiber coverage in some areas, which they purchased from Verizon and are marketing under the same “Fios” brand name. As a DSL provider, one of Frontier’s strengths is in their widespread rural availability, since even rural households usually have access to the twisted copper phone lines needed to deliver Frontier’s DSL connection. Frontier Fios is mostly available in denser urban areas like Seattle, as is the norm for fiber infrastructure due to the high costs associated with its installation on the provider’s side.”

How to qualify

There are two ways to qualify for Frontier’s low-income internet plan. Method One: Someone in your household must currently participate in another federal assistance program. Method Two: Your household income must not exceed certain specified levels. Let’s give you more detail:

Method 1 (Program-Based)

  • Medicaid/Medi-Cal
  • Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • Federal Public Housing Assistance or Section 8
  • Food Stamps or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
  • Women, Infants and Children Program (WIC)
  • National School Lunch Program (NSL)
  • Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
  • Tribal TANF
  • Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance
  • Head Start Income Eligible (Tribal Only)
  • Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations
  • VA Veterans Pension (Supplemental Income for Wartime Veterans)
  • VA Survivors Pension

Method 2 (Income-Based):

Your income must not exceed 135% of federal poverty guidelines. Yes, that’s a confusing number and it varies from state to state. For example, here’s what that means in California:

  • For a household of 3 members: $31,900 per year is the annual income limit
  • For a household of 4 members: $38,800 per year is the annual income limit
  • Add $6,900 per person for each additional member, after four people. Effective from 6/1/19 to 5/31/20.

These numbers are just given as a rough guideline. Contact Frontier customer service and they can tell you what the correct numbers are for your state.
