When you review Comcast’s internet plans on their website, you won’t see or hear anything about their lowest priced plan, Internet Essentials. That’s because it is a program specially designed for just a specific group of people, and not available to every person in areas served by Comcast.
This tremendous deal — unlimited 5Mbps cable internet for just $9.95 per month — is available to low-income families with children who, in general, are eligible for the National School Lunch program.
So, how do you apply if the program is not on Comcast’s list of plans online? There are several ways, all very convenient.
For more general information about Internet Essentials, go here.
Begin at the Internet Essentials website
Comcast has set up a website specifically for Internet Essentials, and it’s appropriately named www.InternetEssentials.com. From here, you’ll be able to apply online or call the phone number they have listed on the page.
If you require a Spanish language website, please visit www.internetessentials.com/es/.
If you’d like to apply over the phone, you can call 1-855-8-INTERNET (1-855-846-8376). For Spanish, call 1-855-SOLO-995 (1-855-765-6995).
Either way, you will be reminded of the following eligibility rules:
- Be located where Comcast offers Internet service
- Have at least one child eligible to participate in the National School Lunch Program (See note below)
- Have not subscribed to Comcast Internet service within the last 90 days
- Does not have outstanding Comcast debt that is under one year old
If you wish to apply online, look for the “Apply Online” button in the top area of the home page, which will take you to the online application page. On this page you will enter your phone number and click the Get Started button.
Comcast will mail or email you the simple application to complete and sign. Send that back to Comcast, along with any documents they request in order to show proof of eligibility. This could include a copy of this year’s acceptance letter or other document from the school or school district proving free-lunch status. They will tell you what they need, specifically.
Note: The InternetEssentials.com website says you must “have at least one child eligible to participate in the National School Lunch Program.” That’s not entirely true. Comcast has extended eligibility twice — first to families with children eligible to receive reduced price school lunches, and then by including parochial, private, cyber-school, and home-schooled students.
In addition, they expanded their instant approval process for families whose students attend schools with 70 percent or more National School Lunch Program participation.
So, make sure you persist with the representative to make sure they know that you are aware of these other methods of qualification.
We don’t know why the official website, and even the Terms & conditions linked to on that website, don’t explain this properly.
Comcast says it will review your application within ten days. If approved you will receive a welcome kit in the mail with everything you need to connect to the internet.
The welcome kit will include a cable modem to connect to the cable jack in your home, and installation instructions, among other things.
Also included in the Welcome Kit will be information on how to get a special deal on a desktop or laptop computer for $150 plus tax. This includes a phone number you can call to place your order.

Hi there, i have been searching everywhere for services available in Weaverville, CA (96093) i am trying to help my cousin get Internet, though I have had a hard time finding anything. The best program that I found (which was thanks to your website btw…) was the internet essentials (xfinity) i got it for my grandmother, but she lives in sacramento, ca. I am looking to find something in weaverville though but the only thing i am finding is regular internet providers and then to use the “LifeLine” program. Do you think you could help me find something? She doesnt want dish internet services, I am hoping to find her something that is similar to the internet essentials, and that you can easily hook up yourself. (Just makes the process much easier if i can find a provider that you have the option to either pick up the modem or they can send it to her and she can easily install it. Any help provided would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your time (*and for this website, its very informative!!)

Alli says
So I don’t have any children went to lunch program but I am low income and I receive food stamp benefits I am disabled and waiting on SSI but I have no Internet access for my laptop and I barely have it on my phone so what do you have that would offer someone without children Internet access at a reduced price or Wi-Fi or mobile to go or data to go something Low income does just not apply to families it apply to individuals as well so what programs do you offer that or realistically something that a person can use and not run out if it is ridiculously high and it makes no sense when it used to be not so much this data phase has really gotten out of control people are breaking their bundles were used to get unlimited data and it wasn’t an issue now all of a sudden it’s like the commodity is the most expensive thing you can get there giving you free service versus data what snacks
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
Our “Low-Income Internet” page lists all the programs currently available, Alli.

Desiree says
How can Internet Essentials discriminate people as far as who deserves to get it.? I get 825.00 a month ^5.00 food stamps & SSI pays for my medicare 134.00 but I am not 62 years old, I am 60 years old & live alone & I am blind & 100% disabled, (CANNOT WORK). This is a joke. The big Internet/TV corporations are so GREEDY that they put the qualifications to meet to qualify, for the disabled it just goes to show you how the human race don’t care about anything but money. THAT’S A GREAT & BETTER AMERICA? NO it is not. It is just a smoke screen to fool everybody in ti believing that the Rich are caring about the less fortunate. Everyone has gripped about the Welfare system, & as long as you have a child at home, & on the free lunch program , WOW you qualify, but what about the 2 jobs they have & one is paid under the table? Plus the boyfriend who secretly lives with you & brings home a couple of grand?. Yes, a real intelligent system for this company to set their guidelines by. I am so disappointed in mankind, who have had of life of wealth & riches, but can’t help the poor. THIS COMPANY IS A JOKE & worse yet Sudden link eith sold ou or merged with a company from FRANCE. That way they can screw our Social System by taking their profits abroad & support FRANCE. Bad company to get ANYTHING FROM
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
Take a look at a program called PCs for People, Desiree. It’s a great option if it’s available in your area:

These comments are really sad. A whole article about how qualified people can get cheap internet. And leave it to people to whine about being left out. I am also disappointed in mankind, Desiree. And you type well for a blind person.
Travis says
I tried applying several times for my child. My son is 5 years old and has severe medical disabilities. He’s on Social Security disability and the health insurance that follows with that. My question is. Because of my son’s disability he is G-tube fed he does not eat orally. He does attend school and has an IEP. He technically doesn’t get any of the school lunch programs because of his G-tube medical needs. And his food is supplied by his health insurance. I do not qualify for HUD as I make too much money. And I do not have food stamps. for myself or my son. Is there any way that my son will qualify for this program? I am aware that this is not Comcast Internet Essentials and that this is a separate form. But you seem to be the most knowledgeable on how this program works. Comcast is not very helpful
Travis says
PS and I also don’t quite make enough to be able to afford $80 a month and internet. I’m too rich but also too poor.
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
Check to see if PCs for People is available in your area, Travis. It’s a pity, but the situation you describe seems to be one that slips through the cracks. Here’s where you can check out all the low-income internet plans, including PCs for People:

My sister has tried unsuccessfully to enroll in Internet Essential. Both times the 800# rep says her papers have been lost and to re-submit. So far, she hasn’t received her third set of paperwork! It’s a great program that’s available in more places than most of the other programs. If the Sprint cell network covers Long Beach — and we would guess that it does — it might be a solution for you. Check PCs for People and all the other programs here:

I can’t afford Centurylink they charge way too much. On a fixed income so I need the help and don’t want to lose my internet service as it’s an important part of my life.
CheapInternet.com Administrator says
We hear you, Janis. The Internet is a vital part of most of our lives. There are other options you should explore if CenturyLink isn’t working out for you. Here’s a link to a page that covers all the major programs. Make sure you check them all out because each program is a little different than the others. There are different ways to qualify and they each cover different geographic areas.

Several of these plans may work for you, but we don’t mind saying that PCs for People is our favorite plan. We hope it’s available where you live.

CheapInternet.com Administrator says
Without asking how you ended up in this situation, we want to congratulate you for stepping up and doing what needs to be done. Your brother and sister will never forget the sacrifices you’re making for them.
But in answer to your question, it sounds as if you qualify for several of the low-income Internet programs. We would suggest that you review them all to find out which ones serve the area in which you live and fit your needs best. You can find them all listed in this article:

We wish you, your brother and sister the best of luck, Shawn.

I am trying to apply for Lifeline Internet for a friend but going online, can find no place to actually apply. I also called your customer service number but when your representative answered, the reception was very poor so this was not helpful either. Please contact me by email and let me know how to actually apply – perhaps a link to the correct page?
Thanks so much,
Judy Pfaff
