If you need internet service for basic services like email and light internet surfing, there’s now a way for you to get the service absolutely free. Gratis. Without charge.
We found this remarkable internet offer while perusing the website of Clark Howard, the legendary radio and TV cheapskate who finds bargains everywhere he looks.
“If you’re paying a significant amount for a monthly internet service,” Howard said, “what if there was an offer where you could get internet service for free? There’s gotta be a lot of catches, right. Well, there are a few.”
This free internet deal is being offered by a company called FreedomPop. To get all the specifics, go to FreedomPop.com.
The catch? You’re required to buy an $89 modem that allows you to surf the internet at home up to one gigabyte. How much is one gigabyte? Well, an average website is about 50 kilobytes in size, so you could visit 20,000 websites every month every month before you eat up your free gigabyte. And emails (not including attachments) are remarkably small. So you could send about 100,000 emails per month with FreedomPop’s one free gigabyte.
Why is FreedomPop giving you a free gigabyte? Because they hope you’ll get hooked on using the internet and need to buy additional capacity.
As Clark Howard said, “If your goal is to have light usage of the internet and they serve your street address, this is a way that you can actually surf the internet for free.”
But FreedomPop’s offer gets even better. If you decide you don’t want or need internet service, you can send your modem back to FreedomPop and they’ll refund your $89. No ifs, ands or buts.

I need internet so i can watch television netflix. i cannot afford anything else. i live near washington dc, however right over the line in maryland and many other offers wont take my zip code of 20877. I am a senior citizen and handicapped on food stamps and medicaid/medicare and can no longer afford fios from verizon which was for the first year $53 month not reasonable and they are raising their price on me next week $15.00 a month. My social security check doesnt even increase that much every year! My question is if I qualify for this 1gig or whatever is small money, will I be able to watch television every day? I do not use the internet very much but when I do it is for email and taking surveys to make small dollars. TV is my first concern. Thank you for reading my question. Mary

Some of the plans provide “unlimited” internet, but slow down the speeds after you use some predetermined number of gigs each month. Visit EveryoneOn.org and plug in your zip code to find out exactly which plans are available in your area.

It sounds as if you qualify for several low-income internet plans, Michael. The big question is if they are available in your area. Here’s a link to all the plans so you can see details regarding the plans and eligibility, where they’re available, and contact info for each company:

I am trying to set my freedom pop up again, I tried back in 2014 when I got my modem but the lady just couldn’t get it across to me on what to do, so I’ve had it plugged in all this time, but my son said to unplug it. I been going to call to see what to do, was going to try the free to see how it worked back in 2014 when I got the modem then pay for higher, but never did anything, but AT&T is just getting so high I can’t afford it, I only keep it cause I check my bank account and e-mails but not much of anything else, I’m not into all this electronic items, And being 80 don’t help none at learning.
I hope you can figure out what I’m trying to do.Thank you

Do you qualify for a low-income internet plan, Helen? Check out all the plans and their qualification requirements here:

We’d suggest that you pay particular attention to the plans from PCs for People and 4GCommunity. They both operate on the Spring national network and if it is available where you live, either one may be a good solution for you.

It’s a real problem if you live in a gap between internet service providers. What about cell service? Are you able to get cell service where you live?

It is a limited data amount. Doesn’t seem to me like a child could get a full month of school work much less any entertainment time from this. As the saying goes the Devil is in the Details.
