The forward-looking Los Angeles City Council is discussing a proposal that would provide free wifi service through the City of Angels.
According to CBSlocal.com, the Council’s Innovation, Technology and General Services Committee (we would imagine that the committee members will have to carry over-sized business cards just to squeeze in the committee’s full name) is working with technology experts to determine if a citywide municipal wifi system is feasible.
The plan was initially proposed by Councilman Bob Blumenfield back in August. If the council approves the plan Los Angeles will become the largest municipality in the United States to offer the free wifi citywide. That will, of course, be a huge technological leap, because the city’s current wifi network is only available at city libraries.
Councilman Blumenfield said free wifi access could can help government, business and tourists. “There may be a happy compromise here where there can be a win-win for both the public sector and the private sector,” he stated.
Of course, there is one snag that could spoil this outstanding plan: No one knows how much the free wifi network will cost nor how its implementation will impact taxpayers.
Don’t let money get in the way, Los Angeles. There’s no doubt that the benefits of free citywide wifi outweigh the costs. Go for it.
