Every once in a while the big, bumbling, bureaucratic federal government does something right. Super WiFi seems to fit that description.
The brains at the Federal Communications Commission are pushing a concept called to Super WiFi, a national network so powerful that everyone could use it to access phone and internet service absolutely free.
Needless to say, this radical proposal has set shockwaves through the $178 billion wireless industry. As you might expect, it is funding a loud lobbying effort aimed at killing the concept. But in a real heavyweight battle, Google, Microsoft and other big name tech companies are throwing their support behind Super Wi-Fi.
Super Wi-Fi would be far more powerful than existing wifi networks. Believe it or not, you would be able to receive Super Wi-Fi signals through in urban canyons, through concrete walls and regardless of terrain. According to the plan, Super Wi-Fi would bring free internet access to almost every American.
Just consider some of the miracles that could be made possible by this new, powerful, long distance Super Wi-Fi:
zdnet.com reports that driverless cars could communicate with each other when they were still miles apart. They also report that a patient’s heart monitor would be able to connect to medical care providers on the other side of town. And, of course, you’ll be able to make free cell phone calls from anywhere.
Unfortunately, this powerful Super Wi-Fi network won’t be up and operating until several years after FCC approval. There are still wrinkles that need to be ironed out, but public WiFi could allow many consumers to make free calls from their mobile phones via the Internet. All for free.
There’s nothing else in the world like Super Wi-Fi. FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said, “Freeing up unlicensed spectrum is a vibrantly free-market approach that offers low barriers to entry to innovators developing the technologies of the future and benefits consumers.”
Cities love the Super Wi-Fi concept because it would reduce the cost of bringing high speed internet service to schools and businesses and it could prove to be a boon for tourism.
Consumer advocates are also throwing their support behind Super Wi-Fi because it brings high speed internet to America’s needy. The steep price of commercial internet service had built a huge digital divide between the rich and poor in America and those consumer advocates see Super Wi-Fi as a way to reduce that gap.
There’s still two major problem facing Super Wi-Fi. One, according to ZDnet.com, it “would require local television stations and other broadcasters to sell a chunk of airwaves to the government that would be used for the public WiFi networks. It is not clear whether these companies would be willing to do so.”
The other problem is that some lawmakers oppose the concept of a free WiFi network and say that auctioning the spectrum would raise billions for the U.S. Treasury. Most of the nation’s large phone companies support that position.
As the nation’s leading advocate of free and low cost internet, CheapInternet.com throws its full support behind the Super Wi-Fi project. We have complete confidence that the political and technical opposition can be overcome because this is a project that has too much potential to ignore.
In other words, Super Wi-Fi is a super idea.
